After being left out the last time Magic the Gathering did an Ixalan dinosaur set, I finally got to do one. My very first MtG art, please take a look. (arttag)

I have been brutally pushing my limit for the last month to get this thing done. I really wanted to see how far I could go. Its 100% hand painted, no photo elements, and certainly no garbage AI slop. This is me, this is what I can currently do. This is 108 hours of painting.

I was fortunate enough to have WotC art director Christina Park work with me on this. She really just let me paint whatever I wanted so long as it had a dinosaur in their world setting so of course I made a big monster T. rex hahaha

The cavern floor is also designed like rimstones grew into an Ixalan styled pattern I designed. In addition there are various glyph swirls in the scales and feathers. I was really taken with the idea of naturally forming icon patterns.

This whole piece is phenomenal. My eyes are just FEASTING on all the details! You really outdid yourself

This is awesome, man! It looks like some of the scariest moments I've had in Monster Hunter! Excellent work and seriously neat feature references you found for the cave floor.

I didn’t originally plan on that for the floor but it felt so plain. I wasn’t sure if this was gonna work but I felt like a genius when I stepped back and saw it starting to come together.

You done did it! Incredible work! I really love the sharp level of detail on the head of the Rex but that you allowed the brush strokes to loose up as you moved away from that focal point.

I went through a period where there was way more detail on the feathers but it just looked bad. I ended up painting over it a lot and dumbed it down to save it.

You were smart to "dumb it down"! I think it really helps not only focus the composition but add a sense of movement. Im such a sucker for loose brush stroke fall off.
