I have a theory that the evangelical Christian right, Catholic & Protestant, with their literal interpretation of biblical texts, are peculiarly vulnerable to this sort of magical thinking, because they already accept miracles and magic as literal truth
Leads to this totally irrational crap
I've seen plenty of magical thinking with "The Secret", crystal healing, auras, etc. that have squat to do with the Christian right.
I can believe that it's a factor but I'd have a hard time believing it's a dominant factor.
I didn’t say they had a monopoly of this nonsense.
But unfortunately they are in power across much of the US atm
And that is rather terrifying, even on this side of the Atlantic
Your theory if the most proven fact in all of history. These people would believe anything. If you are devoid of morality you can make billions off them. They will buy anything if you wrap it in lies.
Ok. Except there are Catholics who are evangelical and super literal - but I suppose it’s not what we mean by the term now
Happy for you to give me a better word for these two groups on the misogynistic anti abortion magical thinking Christian right!
Yeah, the denial of this annoys me. I live in the South and no one who doesn't live here will listen when I say Southern Catholics are just as likely to believe in Evangelical talking points as anyone else, especially the bigotry and Rapture nonsense.
i’m just saying it means a specific thing. it’s a social movement among exclusively protestants.
catholics are just catholics. you could say “catholics and evangelicals” or “christian nationalists” or idk i don’t think we need to muddy the waters in order to have another word for catholic.
protestant evangelism works differently than catholic evangelism. the former is very private and wealth driven while the latter is driven by the church. they also have completely different values. they just align on right wing issues
I want one word/phrase for the far right Christian crazies of all denominations that seem to be taking control of the US GOP
“Ecumenical evangelicals”? - the anti abortion, anti-trans, anti sex education misogynistic nutters, who are now funding politicians in the U.K. too 😳😳
The Columbia River has elevated selenium levels due to runoff from coal mining, which has become a major concern for wildlife & human health, so I think this is a conspiracy by Big Coal.
A friend in Utah told me there’s an urban legend that in the winter after the army detonated nuclear bombs in the desert there was blue snow, & 18 years later half of the high school graduating class - the children born during the blue snow winter - were gay. I want to believe in the gay blue snow.
IIRC there is some evidence that gayness is inheritable (presumably genetic?) but that's a subject of debate that I don't have a position on and will steer clear of 😳😬
I wouldn't go that far, but it does have friends in high places. IIRC there's one Congrescritter in particular with a major conflict of interest who's kept the issue tied up.
Yeah, but these kinds of random bot-generated ads are connected to hundreds, if not thousands, of phony accounts and addresses, and the effort needed to fight back to the people actually in charge is immense, and if it leads to a foreign nation where the local law is paid off, useless.
Not to be shitty, but people that believe this shit and actively engage in it because they think it’ll keep em from having gay kids don’t deserve to have em anyway.
There isn't much of a fetus after two weeks and most definitly no genitalia. But I would REALLY like to know how to determine a fetus is gay at any stage.
People who fall for such a bad scam probably deserve it.
