he’s right and he should say it
Okay if you want a controversial opinion, the drums on 90% of albums sound like fucking shit

I think the drums on "Innervisions" sound pretty good. maybe people should try to do that

listen, not all of us are stevie wonder. actually, none of us are stevie wonder.

I used to think Stevie Wonder was a great musician and then I found out he played, like, everything on his albums and I don’t have sufficient superlatives.

My hottest music take: Stevie's 1970s output is _minimally_ just as good and just as important, musically and socially, as the Beatles' discography.

Seriously: from Music of My Mind to Talking Book to Innervisions to Fulfillingness' First Finale and then Songs in the Key of Life? There isn't a single musician in the world who wouldn't murder their own family for a run like that.

Holy fuck!! That's a monster of a performance. Just relentless groove. And so cool that it's on Sesame Street.

Right?? "Guest musical slot on a kids show" is... not necessarily where most people would bring their A game? But he brings his full band and they show up and just _level_ the place. That kid going nuts dancing on the fire escape is all of us.
Avatar
It's incredible. Band is at the absolute top of its game, all pocket, just laying down fire. And 100% yes on that kid. I feel like the world Sesame Street was trying to create back then would have been far cooler than the one we got.

Prince did a great Starfish and Coffee on a kids show.

Can’t make oatmeal for my toddler without breaking out into 🎶 golden raisins, gooolden raisins, I’d like to go there take me right awaaaaaay 🎶

There’s like, Prince? Maybe Bowie?
Avatar
Yeah, Prince specifically is one of the few musicians who you can comfortably talk about in the same breath, and they were friends which is kinda cool. Here's Prince guesting on "Superstition" (and, uh, having a bit of trouble getting his guitar plugged in) www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbLt...

there’s an alternate universe where tammi terrell doesn’t die and marvin gaye doesn’t die where he makes this list

Oh right I remember our previous conversation about how he started as a session drummer, re: most had-sex-to artist.

I worked at a record store in KC when Innervisions singles were still hitting Top 40 (74). We would play the double album straight through and sell out our stock (50+) on most of those days. And you are spot on to the comparison with the Beatles, but of course, it took four of them ;-)
Avatar
that’s a fucking rad story, thank you for sharing it!
Avatar
It (74-76) was a very fun time to work there.
Avatar
That’s really cool and I would love to hear more. Also, it was absolutely absurd how many hit songs in the early 90s were based on Stevie Wonder’s work. I don’t even begin to understand the magnitude of the impact he’s had, he’s immense.

Even the Red Hot Chili Peppers couldn't ruin Higher Ground! (I kid, I kid! ...mostly)
Avatar
you are wrong and you should say it
Avatar
I feel like if you took a recording of the Red Hot Chili Peppers back in time before humans invented music you would create a new timeline where our species just decided not to bother.

When Paul Simon accepted his Grammy award in 1975, he said, “Most of all, I’d like to thank Stevie Wonder, who didn’t make an album this year.”

Avatar
that's kinda five words?

i thought this was about Nicks and it's true both ways

Also, his stuff seems more fertile for interpretation by others.
