For comics: If you have a joke you really like, but can't fit it in in any way that advances the plot, you can always do a short, unrelated comic strip in between chapters. Manga artists do this all the time in the form of 4koma. The silly little moments don't have to be built into the story!

lately i’ve been seeing a ton of people *aggressively* failing to understand that “kill your darlings” is specifically about like.. that scene you really like that doesn’t actually add anything, ruins the flow, etc.. and sometimes you can’t keep *every* joke, even if they’re all funny!

I’ll offer up a slight counter to this, I find if I say my dialogue out loud it doesn’t necessarily turn into what “a real person would say” as what “I, specifically” would say, which homogenizes voices. My approach is to find a voice I like and imagine that specific actor saying the line out loud

For comic writers: As you edit, read your own dialogue out loud. Multiple times. Does it flow? Does it feel like something a real person would say? It makes the hitches in the script more obvious.

Some advice for folks getting into/ currently making webcomics: You don't have to draw a background for every panel! Sometimes it can be overwhelming and shadow the emotion you're trying to convey in your story. Make sure you have at least an establishing shot to ground the characters though!

Stop putting your effort into details and write like a 5yo. Write like the idea is going to disappear in 5 seconds. It doesn't matter what it is, or if it's even relevant. If you think it's a cool idea write it down!
