Cover Versions That Charted Higher Than The Original AND Were Sung By A Singer of A Different Gender Than The Singer On The Original Version - "Hazy Shade of Winter"(Simon & Garfunkel/The Bangles) - "Nothing Compares 2 U" (The Family/Sinéad O'Connor) - ???

- "Different Drum" (The Greenbriar Boys/The Stone Poneys)

Did either version ever chart? I assume Cowboy Junkies are the cover here but I don’t think it made the Hot 100 only like the Modern Rock chart or whatever.

The Natural Born Killers soundtrack blew it up

Heard It Through The Grapevine Gladys Knight/Pips got it to #2 on the Hot 100; Marvin Gaye took it to #1
Avatar
Wow!! We're not gonna get one closer than that

There is also "Respect." While Otis's version only got to 35, Aretha's topped the charts.

And I guess we can't count the Pointer Sisters "Fire" and Patti Smith's "Because The Night," cos Bruce hadn't actually released them, but we can count Elvis's "Hound Dog" while written by Lieber & Stoller, was originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton.
Avatar
BUT, the 10,000 Maniacs version of "Because the Night" was the highest charting of all (which I know is weird because it's a live acoustic version from that band of all bands but hey, somehow it works). So same gender as Patti but higher than Bruce!
Avatar
Wow, like most things related to 10,000 Maniacs, I'd totally forgotten that!
Avatar
I think you can count "Fire" - the version from Springsteen's live box was a single (#46 vs The Ponters' #2).

This is a great one for the twist that, despite authorship, the Knight version was released first.

This is gonna end up being the top tier example of this phenonomon.

Absolutely. I've read up on that. Good call.

I think “Always Something There to Remind Me” might make the cut (Dionne Warwick/Naked Eyes)

And "Hangin' on the Telephone," if we're accepting UK charts (don't think it placed on Billboard).

Valarie (original by The Zutons/covered by Amy Winehouse) and Fast Car

Oh shit! (sorry about my language)

love the zutons haven't heard/seen anyone mention them in 20 years thank you
Avatar
I love that band! also, they just put out a new album for the first time in like a billion years!
Avatar
did they release anything physical? I like to own media I purchase

was going to jokingly use "He's So Fine" and "My Sweet Lord" but they both were No. 1 for 4 weeks so the latter copied the former on the charts as well

Angel from Montgomery (Raitt vs Prine)?

Avatar
Alas my other guess “Under The Falling Sky” by Jackson Browne covered by Bonnie Raitt never charted, except in my most streamed songs every year
Avatar
Evidence of greater success/popularity/renown will be accepted in lieu of charts
Avatar
Then how about K.D Lang's version of Hallelujah, which was considered the best version by Leonard Cohen.

"When You Were Mine" Prince, did not chart/not released as a single, 1980 Cyndi Lauper, #62 on RPM Top 100, 1984 (charted 1985)

Avatar
Oh, if didn't chart counts, The Arrows and Pet Benatar with "I Love Rock and Roll"
Avatar
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, but I'll take it! Reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, 1982
Avatar
Argh! Tried so hard to remember Arrows and I blew it on tiny leather rock chicks.

At least you didn’t say Suzi Quatro!
