I’m not talking about making age (or function) an issue. I’m talking about saying, for instance, that somebody’s “brain is pudding.” That’s just a horrible way to talk about a human being — and, by extension, lots of other human beings.
I don’t like the current discourse for any number of reasons, but I sure wish it could be conducted with a little less brutally dehumanizing language about old people.
One of the least nuanced assumptions in US political discourse is that folks who have served or are related to people who have served are patriotic or pro-military. The collective memory and personal experiences of Black, indigenous, and other vets of color makes that way more complicated.
As the daughter of a Black Vietnam vet who suffered life long pain from a service related injury but was constantly turned away from care by the VA I can’t even bring myself to read this. My father eventually died of a treatable condition at 62 b/c he was sent home to take ibuprofen by a VA doc.
A 2017 internal Veterans Affairs report shows Black veterans were more often denied benefits for PTSD than their white counterparts. The analysis crunched claims data from fiscal year 2011 through 2016.
And disparate treatment started after WWI when it was still called shell shock.
It continues.
Veterans have been organizers and movers of every modern anti-war movement and the official discourse about “the troops” almost always erases them completely, it irks to no end
the Munsters could start acting and dressing normal and people wouldn't notice they're draculas or franklinsteins or whatever. whereas with the Addams family, one of them is a hand
I know the people who follow law and SCOTUS closely have reasons for thinking of John Roberts as an institutionalist or whatever but to me he has always been one thing: a GOP appointee. And I feel like that has saved me a great deal of disillusionment.
Along these same lines, I highly recommend, "A Village in the Third Reich," which zooms in on one town focusing on pre-war, the war, and post-war.

I will bang this drum forever: in THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE FREE: THE GERMANS, 1933-45 Milton Mayer interviewed 10 ordinary Germans after WW2 to learn how fascism took hold. There was never a moment when everyone woke up:
the vast majority of CDC’s budget goes straight to local and state health departments. they want to guy the entire country’s public health infrastructure. they don’t give a shit if it kills us all
taking a break from your regularly-scheduled cats in boxes programming to share some highlights of what republicans propose for FY2025:
- gutting CDC’s budget
- defunding the new pandemic forecasting center (they want us all to die, especially POC)
- defunding all gun violence and climate work

I really don’t think most people realize just how hard the boot will come down if Trump and the Republicans win the election. Most people have never experienced the totalitarian surveillance state with the power to reach into their homes and minds at will they are telling us is their plan.
I can't see the original post, but I assume it's a reference to Anita Hill. A couple of years before that happened the Dean of Students at my college sent me anonymous mash notes then sent one that he signed asking me to date him.
At the time, this was not viewed as sexual harassment.
The news coverage of the scandal was literally introducing the concept of “sexual harassment” to Americans and Biden and the rest of the Democrats were scrambling to get a grasp on it

Biden is not owed good press by a long shot. But the amount of coverage his age is receiving relative to that of Trump's very real past and promised future actions strikes me as one of the greatest media mis-prioritizations since the run-up to the Iraq War.
There are days that I'm good at being proud of my fitness accomplishments (getting stronger, better stamina, better walking pace) and can ignore the number on the scale but today is not one of those days and I can't tell you how much I hate it.
Realized that the combination of seasonal mood issues related to summer plus election angst means I probably need to go dry (more or less) for a while if I want to actually sleep at night and I'm already surly about it.
