When I first joined Bluesky I didn't know anyone and started using the platform as a bipolar journal that I could go back and analyze over time. I mapped it against my entire digital footprint to get insight into my own mental health, and it was pretty revealing. I wrote it up here. :) Friend link
AI for Mental Health: A Data-Driven View of the Mindmedium.com I analyzed years of my own digital footprint seeking clues to Bipolar disorder — and I found some.

Here's the link to the new graphic too :) Thanks to everyone who gave feedback. It's double sided this time and has some differential diagnosis elements Free, just leave it at $0 unless you're Scrooge McDuck

This is not my best writing lol. I’m pretty fried. I’ll take another pass at some point, apologies for length

😟 this has 26,000 full reads, people went bonkers on fb Didn't mean to host my own full on bipolar coming out party Imma hide under a rock

I wonder how much this kind of analysis is already in place, attempting to monetize the manic whales. Like: if you show an ad or business proposal to someone who has posted 100x more than their average in the past 3 days, etc
Avatar
I can easily picture companies using almost the exact same kind of metrics to determine who is more likely to spend money, knowingly preying on their mental state regardless of later dire consequences
Avatar
It would be interesting to see this kind of personal tracking versus *company* behaviors in different states. How does ___ Corp treat a manic user versus a depressed user? Does LinkedIn know you're manic before you do?

100% Sometime I need to go off here about what instagram calls (used to call?) the “miscarriage problem.” What’s the psychological impact of continuing to suggest cribs etc, and how can companies sort of “hard reboot” their algo on someone It’s a largely invisible but real issue

That's brilliant I was doing this on pre-stank Twitter, bit using their analytics. Super-informative... Very enlightening

Yay good! I’ve had my head up my own a$$ about it for so long I can’t tell if it’s comprehensible

Wow... amazing kinds of displays, sort of still swimming in the stream, trying to get used to the approach.

this is utterly fascinating. i'm schizoaffective bipolar type and this will be really handy for me; thanks for writing such a thorough essay!

Awesome!!! So glad. I’ve been thinking it’s a bit too thorough lol

Haha … the logo for my little company is based on “third horizon” principle, which I thought of with that visualization First horizon - the problems in front of you Second horizon - the problems you see ahead Third horizon - the problems you don’t know are problems yet I like that third horizon

I like that approach I have a decidedly Coast Guard approach. The third is "training we don't know that we need yet"

Read it (my internet was acting up). It appears you're doing what other scientists are doing with AI. Use it to search for patterns, check it, then do the analysis yourself, possibly with code you understand. I got an unasked summary of my resume. It was crazy stupid. But it's what it's.
Avatar
💯 Not a new idea, although I don’t see people doing it much with biometric tokens. I was using a lot of the same stuff in 2012 working on schizophrenia, I can just process a lot more data now Purely patternfinding and followup

I'm into astronomy. 100,000 people are good at recognizing galaxies. AI can do stuff like that too. My tech journalist friend has gotten AI to fix hard to find bugs in his code, but also create bugs. AI doesn't check the code it writes. Can be fast.
Avatar
Yup. Gotta check it One advantage of how I did it was that the LLM only “knows” my own data. So if it hallucinates at least it’s on topic 😂

Can't you find just about anything that you look for on the Internet? Aren't we warned against using the Internet for diagnosis?
Avatar
No internet involved, fortunately :)
Avatar
Also- absolutely do not use any of this for diagnosis lol

Aside, i used to think i was immune to the Internet for diagnosis. I know some medicine, lots of science, have some self discipline. Then i landed on a wiki page describing an old DSM term that fit my ex nearly exactly. Read it three times before noticing it clearly said "Don't use this." Darn it.
