I think this is a hoverfly, and it sat like this for a while. Napping maybe. We all know the drowsies after a big meal.

What’s this little bunched up hiding dude? (Found in NW GA, underside of a goldenrod leaf) @apsciencebydan.bsky.social

They are awesome flyers and bug catchers. Watched a pair this weekend taking turns feeding their 4 hatchlings by bug hunting all day in the neighboring meadow.

Tiny young newt. Colors are awesome. Excuse my fingernail dirt. I was doing yardwork. 🌿🌎 interesting tidbits in notes

A first for me: a Parula. Merlin helped me ID it, then when I played some calls, it came right over and followed me for a while during my stroll through the woods. I’d never even heard of this bird before. Northwest Georgia, US. 🪶

Bird ID help: friend sent this from Florida. Can’t see chest or legs. Osprey or immature bald eagle? 🪶🌿

Used Merlin to call this gnatcatcher and it immediately divebombed and lit upon this fence a couple feet away. 🪶🪶🌿

Got some closeups while this carpenter bee was warming up this morning. Like little drunks when they’re cold.

Someone should tell SAI that they need a security certificate on their site (SSL). Otherwise their traffic will suffer.

My compromise is to leave interesting curves and patches of unmowed strips in the back. It works, but still my yard is “maintained.”

I think the more I learn about them beyond just a “decent” knowledge, the more the fear dissipates. Their web makeup, their intelligence when hunting, how gorgeous they are, etc. I took a walk in Fall in a literal maze of Joro webs in the sun and it was glorious.

I dove in and learned even more about joro spiders (gold webs!), then spotted a male hanging out on a column in front of my dentist’s. I wished him luck finding a mate, and wondered at the bend of his legs like archery bows or pole vault poles. Not stiff. Bowed with his weight a little. Pretty cool.

I don’t know who to credit for this amazing photo that captures the power of a raptor so well
