new comics discourse please Good stuff only

DC should do another Wednesday Comics. Marvel should also do one. The rest of us? We should do one too
Avatar
This is basically the right answer 🫶🏾

Sounds like you want to read some kind of cool weekly anthology comic that comes out with a new issue every Wednesday 🤔

I have literally one suggestion for you!

and after that? Solos. or Duo. idk. just more like Solo as well, please

20 years later, I still think about how good Solo was. I always hoped we'd get more of it.

But for real, I love this idea. For me. For Marvel and DC, they can lose their own money just fine on their own.

I loved opening up a newspaper and it being all comics

I'm seriously trying to figure out a format: ten folded pages is 20 pages of comics. Do I just do this as a broadsheet, or put a cover on it? How big do I need to draw it for it to hold up at tabloid size? Who can print this?
Avatar
I just concluded my read-along book-and-record, so I think this is going to get slotted in before the pop-up book I'm not even sure is feasible.
Avatar
Looks like around $500 for 100 copies (although I haven't confirmed that's full-color yet).
Avatar
The X-Men deserve a Wayne Family Adventures type comic where mutants are just happy and having a blast 95% of the time.
Avatar
The Power Fantasy is officially overhyped.
Avatar
Hmm false. Hype it some more 😈

I want to know which official has certified this.

as clean and exciting as fully inked art can be, there's still a special thrill in seeing the pencils behind the inks or strokes in the inks themselves, especially if they're messy or idiosyncratic. I love IDW's artisan editions (normal-sized artist's editions) for that kind of thing. Very handmade
Avatar
I should look at the artist editions sometime. I want to see the grit
Avatar
I just got the Chris Samnee Black Widow one and holy crap, it's fantastic.

He used collage so much on his pages, I have no idea how he even scanned them or mailed them in. Some of them must have been several inches high. (complimentary)
Avatar
I need to pick some more of these up. I have the Mignola one, but it's pencils and inks so I wasn't getting a clear idea on how much I'm overworking at the penciling stage on my stuff
Avatar
More digest and double digest format comics, gimme the cheap paper.

Hmm…okay……. … 🤔 …………..how about…. NO! 😈

Uuuuh, okay...BOO. WHAT THE HECK? (not sure if doing this right)

I like it when an animal character is also a hobo :)

Your best comic is always the next one you make.
Avatar
I like when a comic tells a complete story in a single issue. It feels like a sense of accomplishment when you finish reading it. A balanced meal.
Avatar
I would like publishers to say “yes” to more weird shit, more often.
Avatar
Comics don't have to come out every week. It's okay to take breaks.
Avatar
Superheroes should go back to much more stylised colouring and silliness where they defeat villains such as Mayonnaise Man or gangsters in pin-stripe suites who say "mook" and "capiche" all the time. Because sometimes, silly things are just good.
Avatar
I don’t think we talk enough how good Busiek and Ross on Marvels was. Might be one of the best things Marvel has ever put out.
Avatar
Grant Morrison is greatly under-rated as a meat and potatoes comic book writer. The weird shit works because they can reliably hit the traditional action/soap opera beats.
Avatar
This is true! They really do the fiddly character stuff, but fans don’t give them credit. The nerdy stuff is interpreted as deep philosophical code rather than “nerdy stuff”
Avatar
there should be more info out there on the art of making comics where the panels can be wrapped under each other or on a single line, webtoons are walking around acting like they invented that and they didn't! (this is my bit where i pretend this is the most damning crit of webtoon corp llc inc lol)
Avatar
now one could say that the art of having "fluid" panel layouts like that is almost anti-art, since you're usually going to sacrifice really crazy ideas where panels mix and overlap, unfortunately, unless you work yourself into an early grave with designing radically diff panels for diff layouts.
Avatar
ive seen webtoon zoomers make tutorials for each other where they change the layouts of bubbles & characters to suit vertical, grid, and horizontal, but i wouldn't consider that practical. i'd rather sacrifice some fun panel artistry, than do almost twice the work, if i had to choose. but that's me.
Avatar
however i do think anyone going down that route has to be aware of just what they are choosing to "cut" from the artistic process, because you can go real fucking bananas with panels, gutters, and all that interplay. ive thought about it myself, and it's not necessarily an easy decision.
