Starting to think the old comic book villains didn’t sound like that because they were dumbed down for kids, but because that’s just how assholes like that sound when they get a taste of power.

ICMYI I wrote about the importance of being a citizen archivist. We've seen so much incredible art and writing from marginalized people, and we need to preserve it in the face of a huge, well-funded backlash. This is something concrete you personally can do! buttondown.email/charliejane/...
We Should All Be Archivistsbuttondown.email Lately, I keep obsessing about two seemingly opposing but interrelated trends: 1) The past decade has seen an incredible bounty of art and self-expression...

Larry Hama invented Cobra as the villain for G.I.Joe and based them on the John Birch Society and Amway.
No, let’s do this properly: The Sex Pistols were a boy band that was formed in order to sell clothing. Look it up.

A good, hard read for this moment is Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl survived the Holocaust, and the book is a straight-forward discussion of the mindset you need to keep going, including surviving after the trauma has passed.

This is all gets even funnier when you realize that this guy is most likely British. He was already mortified that someone committed an unprovoked conversation on him, and she escalated it straight to asking him about his preferred sex toys. That man needed medical attention after this.
I have so many questions for the poor, uncomfortable cishet male “friend” JKR was very much sexually harassing in that story EVEN IN HER OWN WORDS you come away with a clear sense that a man was stunned into silence by the horrifying shrieks of a harpy he did nothing to encourage or engage

A lot of nations outside the EU have visa schemes for teleworkers with a $5k to $15k buy-in and proof of continued income. These will shift as things progress, and Europe is hardening against immigrants, but there are Paraguays that want middle class educated knowledge workers.
[Former state dept. kid speaking] more accurately, plenty of countries want the commerce that American tourists bring; few countries want Americans to stay. Regardless of whether the US has interfered in the country or not.

Totally random historical fact: Historians generally credit Marshal Pétain's advanced age of 84 as a major factor in why France was so slow to respond to Hitler.

Some light historical reading for a quiet Tuesday morning: “A second type of simple sabotage requires no tools… A non-cooperative attitude may involve nothing more than creating an unpleasant situation among one's fellow workers, engaging in bickerings, or displaying surliness and stupidity.”

Werner Herzog directing a Maybelline ad: Perhaps she is born with it. What a frightful notion, to be imbued with the fetters of capitalist commodification from birth. It suggests God Himself is a part of our dreadful pattern instead of a refuge from it.

Outside of some remote areas and specific communities, the rural experience in America is like living in a really shitty suburb. Same TV, same (if crappier conmection) Internet, drive car home, mow yard, play games, drive to strip mall. Worse choice in stores, but same rhythm of life.

If you want to know the best thing you can do for your mental health and country, get involved in a mutual aid group as best you. Donate a Sunday a month at a soup kitchen or food drive. It will help you do something good and immediate and get attuned to larger movements.

I'm just saying: if all we ever do online is dissect the shitty actions of the 8 worst guys, and draw from this that humanity is terrible, and then use that conclusion to give up all hope for the world, & meanwhile a huge community of activists is desperate for our help... this is bad

My contribution to the George R.R. Martin discourse is that he’s a very good writer. But he is very much of that generation of American SFF writer whose idea of putting in the work when worldbuilding was slapping together whatever jumble of cliches and stereotypes were floating in his head.

My big Doctor Who takes are the Gatwa’s bubbly demeanor hid how much he was channeling Eccleston’s broken doctor performance. And “He looks like a dog. Snap a leash on him, and we’ll drag him behind the car until he’s dead” is a hilariously lateral way to kill a god.
