Brigading and bullying smart, thoughtful people until they quit a site, just because they don't meet your level of purity (or because you misinterpreted something they said) is a pathetic way to go through life.

The patterns and themes of Braverman’s political speech are not new. They have cropped-up time and time again in the language of fascists. They are themes intended to appeal to people’s worst fears & prejudices at an emotional rather than rational level, themes intended to demonise.

no person with two brain cells to rub together thinks politically appointed judges are more neutral than disinterested, unelected bureaucrats. that’s the whole point of bureaucrats!

the implication of “unelected bureaucrats” is that they’re boring technocrats who aren’t politically accountable. that’s … exactly who you want handling regulation. judges are not disinterested, not experts, and not politically accountable. that’s obviously worse!

With all the talk about the French elections being held so close to the Olympics, it only just dawned on me that this time next Sunday, the country will be "celebrating" le Quatorze Juillet and possibly even (though it's a long shot) a Euros victory. Quel débâcle.

I think this sober take is correct. After initial relief we no longer have to live through daily Tory psychodrama, the focus will shift to all the problems - including the fact that Reform, with its simplistic populist ‘solutions’ to complex problems, got ~15% of the vote; & that turnout was v low.
3. I'd been thinking with relief that the UK was bucking the trend of a rising radicalized far right. But I think that was premature. And Labour inherits a catastrophic landscape for governance. It will take near-perfect leadership and a lot of luck to get this right. Otherwise 2029 could be scary.
