@NBCNews: Social media has been buzzing with examples of Google’s new, “experimental” AI tool going awry. A Google spokesperson said the company believes users are deliberately attempting to trip up the technology with uncommon questions. https://t.co/Wj9iuKzzHk

Yeah, “how do I deal with depression?” is a really niche, obscure question, so you can see how the AI tool inevitably had little information to lead its response with beyond “One Reddit user suggests jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.”
Avatar
Some folks are telling me the “jump off the Golden Gate Bridge” screenshot is a human fabrication of the sort of machine-made fabrication we’re not just likely to get, but already getting from AI. If you’re finding it hard to separate the fake frauds from the real frauds, you’re not alone.
Avatar
That one was actually faked, though. Still, there's a whole slew of perfectly normal questions it's fucking up.
Avatar
It really doesn't matter if it's faked or not, a LLM will inevitably feed incorrect information if you start waking it for facts
Avatar
Well, it does matter because... *glances around suspiciously* ...I wouldn't put it past the techbros to spread a bunch of fake bad answers which immediately get debunked so that they can claim *all* the bad answers are fake. So folks who want to end this nonsense need to not be spreading fakes.
Avatar
yeah l bit on that. mea culpa

Saw your name and thought. "Huh, I didn't know Hulk Hogan had kids."

Avatar
Andromeda, it took a second for that to hit, but I smiled real wide. : )
Avatar
I just got this joke because as I mentioned in the other skeet I knew one of Hulk Hogan's brothers so my brain just didn't process the humor. Well played.
Avatar
I didn't. I'm fucking stupid.💀💀💀
Avatar
If it helps Hulk Hogan's real name is Terry Bolea so his brothers' kids all have Bolea for a last name. I know because I went to school with one of them.

Avatar
Damn, just checked, he's not the son of Hulk Hogan
Avatar
But I *am* Paul Hogan’s nephew.
Avatar
That's not a nephew, THIS is a nephew
Avatar
I still quote lines from his comedy series from when they used to show it on our station in Georgia. His own stuff was generally funnier than his big star turns in movies.

No idea what to believe, but FWIW the article suggests that that specific example is seemingly fake
Avatar
Well, they have only themselves to blame for creating this atmosphere, is what I say.
Avatar
That’s true and you should also delete the post!
Avatar
Yeah, can’t argue with that
Avatar
Avatar
apparently that one was fake but the believability is highly indicative
Avatar
I hope this forces them to give user option to turn it off.
Avatar
They did, it's just not terribly well known. You have to add &udm=14 to the end of your search URL. Or just do your searches from here: udm14.com
&udm=14 | the disenshittification Konami codeudm14.com A quick way to get an AI-free search without any extra work.
Avatar
On nice, didn't know they made a shortcut for the URL. The problem is you lose some useful features too, like reverse image search (that can also do text OCR).
Avatar
Yeah, it's not a perfect solution. And it doesn't address the fact that Google search has been lousy for years thanks to aggressive SEO. But it's better than nothing.
Avatar
Oh yes, getting rid of summary widgets and AI overviews is great.
Avatar
honestly, it’s almost not better than nothing. it leaves the people who are not technically savvy cordoned off in awash in misinfo that the savvy can just wash their hands of. it also doesn’t fix the driving traffic to websites issue, they will still see a massive drop bc most users aren’t savvy.
Avatar
Using Reddit to teach the thing may not have been the best idea they ever had…
Avatar
Or just don’t use Google
Avatar
•waves the little DuckDuckGo flag•
Avatar
Yeah it does improve Google noticeably but people saying "this makes it go back to the way Google was in the good old days!" are lying to themselves
Avatar
it gets rid of the ui elements but the search results are the same as far as i can tell. ya gotta flip on verbatim search to make it behave.
Avatar
Depending on what you're searching obviously, but I've also been using "before:2023" to improve results and eliminate AI garbage sites that crawled to the first page in searches.
Avatar
I can't remember when was the last time reverse image search was usefull. I feel when trying to find where an illustration or a photo came from it just goes into an endless loop of pinterest boards.
Avatar
I find tineye.com better when trying to find attributions for images.
Avatar
Google reverse search used to be good. Now it's just a product placement. Yep, tineye is a good one.
Avatar
That's one of the least user-friendly options I've seen from a multi-billion dollar conglomerate.
Avatar
This way they can claim that they gave users the option, but almost no one used it, everyone must really love AI! 🥰 So please do use udm14.com and tell your friends about it. You can also go to tenbluelinks.org to make your Google searches default to the no-AI version.

I just used the instructions here to add the UMD-14 to a search in my browser. it's basically add a new search and make this the url: {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s
Bye Bye, AI: How to turn off Google's annoying AI overviews and just get search resultswww.tomshardware.com You can configure your browser to return only web page results.
Avatar
I tried it and got the same AI-laden and sidebar-happy results I got from starting at Google.com.
Avatar
I tried it on a lark and was like yes, OK, and then for grins tried a “vanilla” search and was just absolutely floored by how many ridiculous sprinkles have been added and how much space they have been taking up. I am the proverbial boiled frog.
