Also, speaking of word of mouth, may I please remind you that - Isabel Yap's collection of short stories NEVER HAVE I EVER is very good, and - Nadia Bulkin's collection of short stories SHE SAID DESTROY is also very good (And they are good in QUITE different ways)

Things seem bleak but it’s probably a bad sign for Republicans that people have started mentioning their actual goals and political blueprint and their response is “how fucking dare you??”

Dems should run ads just showing this, then slowly zooming in on "end recreational sex"
I really don’t think most people realize just how hard the boot will come down if Trump and the Republicans win the election. Most people have never experienced the totalitarian surveillance state with the power to reach into their homes and minds at will they are telling us is their plan.

Authors making a website for their webcomic for the very first time: I am begging you to add an about page. You GOTTA be able to pitch your work to someone visiting for the first time, even if you only have 25 pages up

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR AGAIN! If you're a U.S.-based comics creative - aspiring, working, or otherwise - and you do ONE thing to help out your fellow creators this year, let it be filling this survey out!
It's time for the 2024 Comics Worker Survey for US workers! Pay transparency is crucial to uncovering patterns in pay inequity & learning what publishers and clients can ACTUALLY pay us. Submit your info and encourage your peers to do the same! cartoonist.coop/2024USsurvey (art by Phil McAndrew)

Republicans know Trump's agenda would be disasterously unpopular: From The Washington Post Editorial Board: "The former president wants the 2024 GOP platform to be anodyne, but don’t be fooled. He has an extreme agenda." Read it: buff.ly/4csXz23

E.g., if I use a search engine to query “how to make cheese stick to pizza” and it points me to somebody joking about adding glue to the sauce on Reddit, I might be annoyed that the result is irrelevant and not that useful, but I’m not going to blame the search engine for what the person said.

This is a very important point: a great many web 2.0-era platforms (especially search and social media) are fundamentally structured around unpredictable outputs (and inputs). But the unpredictability is usually an obvious function of *other people’s speech and behavior,” not your technology.
"unpredictable outputs" is the thing I keep hammering home to anyone with their hands on a budget. you can't have customer-facing tools with unpredictable output if you have a public image to project/protect, it never ends well

“Skeleton Key” and “jailbreaking” are bad metaphors for general-purpose AI chatbots that anthropomorphize them into sentient prisoners whose behavior can be neatly observed and controlled. They are large-scale stochastic systems with unpredictable outputs operating with no coherent baseline.
“In a blog post last week, Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich acknowledged the existence of a new jailbreaking technique that causes ‘the system to violate its operators’ policies, make decisions unduly influenced by a user, or execute malicious instructions.’”

The number one response I've been getting in the last few days is that Trump isn't involved and doesn't want to have anything to do with it so therefore we shouldn't worry. I don't know how to combat that. They are convinced P2025 isn't going to happen. :(
“They want to eliminate national parks” is a very simple way to get just about anyone on the Stop Project 2025 train. Are there much more glaring and life-threatening goals of P25? Yes but even your most bigoted cousin does not want to see the parks system sold for parts.

The robot is not a bargaining unit member and must not be given bargaining unit work. Faculty unions should be looking over their contracts right now, figuring out exactly how to grieve or otherwise oppose the introduction of these systems.

I once saw someone from Tumblr say, to paraphrase briefly, the Paradox of Tolerance resolves when we think of it as a social contract. The unspoken agreement is that we don't actively harm others. When anyone chooses to be intolerant, they've broken the contract, so it no longer applies to them.

As a chem TA, one of the most valuable things I ever did with struggling students in office hours was have them narrate for me how they would solve a problem, and then figure out what it was they weren’t getting. That’s how you get the lightbulb moments.

So a thing about AI is that, not understanding the material itself, it cannot understand what the gap is in someone else’s understanding. Students already have access to materials that will repeat important points over and over. They don’t need more.
