I think that they also (rightly) assume that many people saying it are in fact going to vote for them when the chips are down and I dunno if that'd change their thinking
i think a big movement of disgruntled leftists banging on about doing protest votes for trump to just rip the bandaid off would generate more concern in party leadership but idk
