"Look kids, the way the bill gets passed is that McDonalds and Raytheon wrote some text, laundered it to a legislative staffer for a sympathetic member, paid $10m into the senate leadership fund, and they agreed to federally fund a thing in 4 districts to count to 50%" is a bit depressing for school

And the thing is, the reality is sort of somehow /both/ less /and/ more cynical than most folks appreciate. It's a mess. But /neither/ the civics basics nor the "it's all porkbarrel" are entirely wrong, but folks who only see one are misinformed by not seeing the other

I imagine it's more of a means to an end problem. Reps are generally opinionated, sometimes principled, and do what their constituents want, but if pork barrelling gets the job done when nothing does and it doesn't piss off their voters, what do they care?

The three coequal branches of government are the Senate parliamentarian, the White House office of legal counsel and the United States district court in Amarillo Texas

The three branches are the WH chief of staff, that one staffer for a member that memorized congressional procedure, and the northern district of texas

And yes, before anyone else mentions it, about a minute into this video you will discover it is indeed the unedited original version which has aged extremely poorly...

Trying to convince people that voting during the primary is about 1000x more important than showing up once every four years to vote against whoever is president is just exhausting.

Kind of hard to work that into a catchy tune for Schoolhouse Rock

And yet if we taught this, then we could have a chance to exploit it ourselves.
