People ask me why a species would evolve to live underground. This is one of the main reasons. It’s too hot outside! Usually even at 6 inches underground it can be 20 degrees cooler than the surface. It’s no coincidence Australia is top when it comes to legless lizard diversity.

Anyone have any recommendations for environmental chambers appropriate for small animals like lizards? I'm open to reach-ins or rooms, looking for something that works reliably! I'm not hearing good things about Darwin Chambers... 🧪

Bikeable, lots of public art, and great coffee. I could live in Seattle (in the summer 🌞)!

This is a nice piece to keep at hand as it deftly lays out the ravages of AI on the environment. Even easier to digest for those of us seeing data centers (almost literally) gobble up our backyards.
Google’s emissions are up 48% in 5 years. Microsoft’s are up 30% since 2020. Those soaring figures are being driven by mass investments in data centers to power AI tools. Generative AI is a climate disaster and data center expansion must be stopped.

Over at the Bad Place, I made a tradition of posting Douglass' "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth of July," and I intend to carry on that tradition here. Since most versions you read in classes or in textbooks have parts omitted, the link below has the full text of the speech.
(1852) Frederick Douglass, "What, To The Slave, Is The Fourth Of July" •www.blackpast.org On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass was invited to address the citizens of his hometown, Rochester, New York. Whatever the expectations of his audience on that 76th anniversary of the signing of the D...

Anyway I've just discovered (1) postcard stamps are more than 50 cents apiece, which is folding money when you're doing a couple hundred and (2) prices are going up in two weeks! So now's a good time to stock up on "Forever" stamps in nice calming sailboat prints store.usps.com/store/produc...

It's a cliche but it's true: be the change you want to see. Doing this work within the framework of academic societies can help speed up progress and establish healthier social norms.

Okayyyyyy you asked for lots of hard to draw stuff and I made a lot of nightmare fuel from those requests. In the end, we have 3 deep sea creatures that would prefer that we collectively do NOT destroy their homes via deep sea mining. Try recycling maybe, they say.

This is not just one person’s or one research center’s problem. The World Economic Forum lists Misinfo as their #1 risk to global stability over the next 2 years … and climate-fueled weather extremes (a common misinfo target) as #2. This puts us ALL at risk. /🧵 www.weforum.org/publications...

For context, this project has had a donor for several years who had to back out. They only need a few thousand bucks and every single one will make a difference.
I'm 52 today! If you'd like to get me something, how about you share a few bucks with this exceptional program that provides access to genuine field research for community college students from urban Los Angeles? These folks have been doing it for years and they change lives.
