There's a somewhat amusing, in hindsight, tidbit of New Hampshire history that comes to mind. In 1832, in the northernmost part of the state, residents declared themselves to be an independent republic know as the Republic of Indian Stream. It might not have been such a big deal but (1/ )

a few years later it appeared that Indian Stream might be about to invade Canada (it's a long story). At that point no less than Andrew Jackson and Lord Palmerston of Great Britain became involved in the kerfuffle. Cool heads prevailed, but it is a case study for why you shouldn't have anyone (2/ )
