the biggest router bit I own is not big enough to bore out the holes for my clamps am I going to now buy an $80 coated router bit that should last forever? …tempting but no, if I was going to do that it would be a normal sized chamfer bit, it’s cheap Amazon burn-up bit time

The thing that some people, and by some people I mean cowards, don’t like about white cedar is that the sapwood/heartwood transition can be almost white, but whatever, I can find something to do with that

it’s soft wood (also softwood) so don’t make a table from it or anything, but in the summer Lowe’s usually sells 5/4x6x8 cedar decking for $13. It’s 1” after their surfacing, which means you can get milled 3/4”+ furniture boards out of it much cheaper than from big box pine. Looks nicer, too.

I pick up a few boards every time I go, because it’s only available in the summer. The grain pattern is super bold and the color change will look nice under an oil finish. I’m excited to finish this last-for-now round of shop improvements and crank out a couple of cedar chests with this stuff.

All the guide holes are done. That bit in the middle is a bit of a monster of a 20mm boring bit. I need to drill through all of these guides to make the dog holes. The un-drilled section is where the router lift is going to go.

Took off the extra laminate with a flush trim bit. After breakfast it’s time to put a chamfer on the edges (because a fresh cut maple edge is sharp enough to draw blood) and then figure out how a Parf system works for drilling the dog holes in the tabletop.

My next step after cleaning up the top tomorrow is going to be to drill a MFT pattern dog hole set for clamps etc., then clean up the dog holes and cut out a slot for a router lift. I already flushed up the hardwood edges so I can clamp along the table edge if I want to
