Lot of conversation about antisemitism this week so just a gentle reminder that we don’t hyphenate the word, because it implies there is such a thing as a “Semitic” race (there isn’t, there’s only Semitic language) - and implying there is a Jewish race is of course deadly for the Jews. More info:
This stuff is so complicated. It's like how the term "racism" itself is racist because "race" as a term is now considered pseudoscience (ethnicity is far more accurate), but trying to cancel the word "racism" robs those who have experienced it with a way to describe such experiences
Thanks for this knowledge. I never knew. It's like how for transwomen /transmen: it's better to have the space "trans woman" because trans is an adjective describing women / men.
So for similar reasons , putting a space there is necessary since without it is a way to dehumanize trans folk
Question, Is antisemite a word? I see it a lot but it also makes it sound like Semite is a thing we would be using.
As we see more and more of this talk of antisemitism again in social media, I want to make sure I'm not using the shitty words .
I kinda wish we weren’t stuck with it, since it was created by antisemites to sound more reasonable and scientific than Judenhass (Jew hatred) and constantly causes semantic confusion.
"Judenhass" is objectively a more appropriate term, and frankly there's no reason to let Judenhassers decide the terminology with which we can describe our oppression.
We both can and should return to calling it Judenhass.
That is really fascinating. Thanks for posting. I learned a lot from this post. I was under the impression that "Semite" meant a Jewish person but I'm glad to learn that it isn't so that I don't accidentally use it in some kind of context unknowingly.
Shit. I have long used “anti-Semite”, after seeing it written that way by many Jewish people. Now I feel like an asshole. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Will adjust my typing in the future. (And hope that we can have an end to antisemitism so we don’t need grammar lessons on it.)
Very interesting! Reminds me a bit of how TERFs use transwoman/transman instead of trans woman/trans man to imply that we're something different than men and women. Sort of the reverse of what they did here.
It’s tricky because I’m Askenazi despite being an adoptee with exclusively ancestry from the British isles and Ireland. I’d go with “generic heritage largely found among Ashkenazi Jews,” even though it’s a mouthful.
Friend who found from 23&me that somebody he knew was his 4th cousin said that a lot of the early customers where were techies with Ashkenazi backgrounds, getting tested because of the recessive-gene diseases.
I've always heard the term used way more often than people were talking about inheritable genetic factors, which generally don't come up often in conversation. I've only rarely heard it used in the disability community, and it didn't come up when consulting a geneticist.
Similarly to the misappropriation of the word “Aryan” which is also a linguistic group.
Unscientific claims by design false.
Information warfare, psyops etc.
I'm for this trend, but I think we need to be careful about presenting it as a settled issue. Lots of Jewish organizations and people still use the hyphen. www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/anti-semitis...
You can tap the alt text to partially hide it, or zoom the image in just a tiny bit and it will entirely hide the alt text.
It’d be nice if it could be hidden easier though 😅
yeah but it also lists the likes, retweets, etc. as numbers with a chinese character thrown in.
it's a long day, not trying to distract from the main topic. my bad!
