I remember when I first read Animal Farm I was like “goddamn this is just a cross between The Hunger Games and Brave New World.”

Then I read Lord of the Flies and I was like “wait this is just like Animal Farm except if you added Idiocracy.”

Even if this was how Venn diagrams work, half of these don't make any sense. Just someone filling in blank spaces with the names of whatever post-apocalyptic/dystopian fiction they can recall.

OK, here's my guess for the themes: North = Thought police West = Class division East = Ignorance South = Open violence

But hunger games isn't even about open violence until the rebellion kicks off, the games themselves are ritualized violence, not open.

Sure, that's just a first approximation. Maybe "routine violence"? Point is that in the dystopias outside the circle, violence is more threatened than accepted.

In other words, if you do as you're told in 1984 then at least you won't die violently, but no such guarantees in Hunger Games or Mad Max.
