Well, you can't say they aren't treating their new public editor like they treated their old public editor.
Wow. @nytimes.com has closed their Threads account and left the platform after days of getting just shredded in the replies for their handling of Biden post debate. Now they're getting dog piled on Instagram for running from Threads.

Couple next to me is discussing a jukebox musical based on Live Aid that's coming to town. And my god, I can think of little I'd less like to see.

How long can you have ironic facial hair before it stops being ironic? Asking for half the men at this show.

Was there a sitar? Yes. Werre the lyrics all in Sanskrit? Also yes. Was there a song based around the Mahā-mantra? No, silly. There were two songs.
Despite this light joking, they're enjoyable in a very 70s eastern mysticism way. Just not my thing.

Actually, I shouldn't say not my thing. I do own the Alice Coltrane religious chants albums. Just maybe a little too much for me.

Opening band has a blacklight poster for sale, just lit incense, and is now sitting cross legged on the stage to perform. I don't know if I'm physically capable of being stoned enough for this.

Going to make my prediction now: come the autumn the Times will put out a non-endorsement of any candidate that heavily implies that Trump isn't so bad.
I don’t even know where to begin with this.

Anyway, my place smells of pie and I've still got a half pint of sour cherries to snack on.
Sure, I could spend Friday night arguing on here. Or I could go pit the pint or two of Montmorencies that I bought to make apricot sour cherry pie.

It's a summer Friday. How about some music instead of whatever it is we're arguing about. Nick the Knife is a bit of a lesser Nick Lowe album. It's not necessarily bad, it's just inconsistent. But "Raining Raining" is a lovely little piece of '60s soul & a staple of his setlists.

There's a reference in here to other systems still making use of floppies & that's not entirely surprising. Replacing a specialized system tends to be expensive. If you've got something that works, where you already know all the quirks & the bugs that haven't been ironed out, why spend the money?
For context, it's been 20 years since floppy disks were in their prime and 53 years since they debuted
Japan wins 2-year “war on floppy disks,” kills regulations requiring old techarstechnica.com But what about fax machines?

Was Snowden a cutout for Russian security services when he leaked everything? No. He was just a weird little libertarian who couldn't stand the idea of a Democrat being president. Is he a cutout now? Yes. No question.

I didn’t expect the Americans to be so excited about the UK general election. Taking the whole day off AND fireworks?

While I'm posting about X & Alvin: I do wish they'd eventually get The Modern Sounds of the Knitters up on Bandcamp. Rounder Records, who own Zoë Records, is already there. So technically it should be possible.

You can probably tally this as another mark in the mid-2025 early election column.
An internal government document, obtained by @emmamci.bsky.social through access to information legislation, shows the Ministry of Transportation has “no commitment to a timeline” for finishing the project or even finalizing its design.

Monkees discourse reminded me of the existence of Carole King's original demo for "Pleasant Valley Sunday" And it's funny because it's still recognizably the same song. But missing that familiar guitar riff that opens & fills the space between stanzas on the Monkees version, it seems a little empty

@golikehellmachine.com btw, if you've never seen them before, Spiritual Cramp are going to be in Portland at the end of the month. I'm a bit lukewarm on their albums, but they put on one hell of a live show.

Favourite bad dates to have overheard at bars & restaurants: • the guy who started explaining bacon to his date. (You see, you start with a pig…) • the clearly underage kid who tried to impress his date by ordering wine & the told the server he had just handed her a fake ID in literally those words
i am doing this at a bar where there are at least three tinder dates going on within earshot, in case you wonder what it’s like to feel like you’re on acid without being on acid.
