#InsertAnInvert2024 Subterranean - Underground Animals that live underground often lose features like vision and body color. To compensate for this, they typically gain other traits like long sensory hairs or antennae to navigate the dark environment. 🎨 🐡

hi #PortfolioDay I draw bugs and stuff

#InsertAnInvert2024 Subterranean - Surface Creatures that live deep underground often have close relatives that still live on the surface. These surface dwellers typically look "normal" and lack the strange features that their subterranean cousins have. 🎨 🐡

#InsertAnInvert2024 Parasites - Parasitoid Parasitoids hatch on, inside, or near another organism, eventually consuming the host as they grow up. Many parasitoid insects, primarily wasps, are seen as beneficial pest control to farmers. 🎨 🐡

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 8/8 Our last cephalopod, the Strawberry Squid, is a relatively unassuming squid-shaped squid. If you zoom in closer though, you'll see that it has strawberry-like skin and mismatched eyes—one much larger than the other. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 7/8 Blob Octopus, also known as Seven-arm Octopus, doesn't actually have seven arms. In the males, the eight arm used for mating is normally coiled and hidden. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 6/8 Vampire Squid, which isn't really a squid, is an oddball like no other. It's more closely related to all octopuses than squids, which explains its weird, mixed up anatomy. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 5/8 Flapjack Octopus, arguably some of the cutest cephalopods out there, are often found sitting on the seafloor, looking adorable as heck. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#InsertAnInvert2024 Parasites - Mesoparasite Some parasite species live partially embedded into the host's body while leaving parts of their own body exposed. The shark sucker barnacle, for example, has its root-like peduncle burrow into the flesh of various sharks, most notably lanternsharks. 🎨 🐡

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 4/8 Giant Pacific Octopus is essentially an octopus-shaped octopus. A classic. A timeless beauty. An icon. Which is why it was number four on our species list to illustrate. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 3/8 Blanket Octopus is another returning species from our old roster. With its wide, blanket-like appendages, it has one of the most iconic octopus silhouettes out there. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 2/8 Bigfin Squid, one of the most striking squids, was the first squid included in our roster. The earliest specimens were found dead in a bad shape. They lacked the extremely long appendages, hence the name "bigfin". 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

#CephalopodWeek 2024 illustrations 1/8 Nautiluses are the only living cephalopods with external shells. They look so strikingly different from other cephalopods, it was only right to include it again in the updated illustration set. 🐡 🎨 apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo...

Cephalopod Week begins tomorrow! It's a 8-day celebration of goopy goodness. Science Friday asked me to update their fundraiser badges, check them out in their natural habitat, SciFri's Sea of Support: apps.sciencefriday.com/sea-of-suppo... More shenanigans: www.sciencefriday.com/spotlights/c...

I wrote about my process here, in which I basically dumped the entire email chain into a (free) patreon post. www.patreon.com/posts/106123... It also highlights my evolving relationship with #SciArt commissions, as we went from this set of realistic cephalopods in 2019 to what we have above.

#InsertAnInvert2024 Parasites - Endoparasite Endoparasites live inside the host's body. They often remain invisible, but some can alter the host's appearance. The green brood sac famously sits inside snails' eyestalks, their bright green bands visible through the snail's translucent skin. 🎨 🐡

It's been fun to push my styles in different directions but I realized they have gotten more and more complex over time. I plan on displaying all the images on one page eventually, so I thought it's nice to go back to simplicity so that the later images don't overpower the earlier ones.

#InsertAnInvert2024 Parasites - Ectoparasite The most visible parasites are usually ectoparasites—critters that live on the surface of the host's body. For example, the fish louse Argulus foliaceus is one of the most well-known parasitic crustaceans, found on ornamental or food fish worldwide. 🎨 🐡

#InsertAnInvert2024 Carcinization - Absolutely not crab Some crustaceans, especially parasitic ones, evolved to live in strange niches. As a result, they ditched crab or shrimp-like bodies to be more wormlike. In extreme cases like Dendrogaster, their preffered shape is "absolute abomination". 🎨 🐡
