This is dead on, and also my most Boomer opinion: so many consumer products are complete and total dogshit, zero quality.
i've always loved the Terry Pratchett Boots Theory of socioeconomics but it's really striking now how it's slowly becoming inaccurate bc so many companies straight up do not make good products anymore. not even rich people can buy things that aren't designed to break in 3 years bc they don't exist

friends I would love it if you would recommend quality products of all sorts, I'm tired of buying cheap shit. My recommendations: Lee Valley tools, Anker chargers/power bricks, Balega Zulu running socks, Outshine fruit bar popsicles (1. Grape 2. Lime 3. Lemon)

Lee Valley Hand Tools are excellent. I also recommend: Estwing Hammers & Mallets made in USA Lennox razor knives Husky wrenches and sockets Panasonic rechargeable batteries Rikon air filter units for shops Jet drill press Wrangler USA ATG synthetic hiking pants Cyclo Breakaway spray

We need a "buy it once" list of products made in the USA, I'd gladly pay a premium for union-made, US-made, quality products that *last*

Throgood work boots are union made, if you wear them everyday to a job site I think they'll probably last a few years, much more with a resole. If you don't, then probably forever.

I'm a simple man. What I want is the internal works to a toilet that last more than 18 months. I'd pay a lot for that.

I wonder if you can get a better grade of product from B2B distributor (i.e. sells to plumbers) rather than a retail option. Supposedly restaurant supply places are with the effort to get in the door
Avatar
Mother outlaw has convinced the local restaurant supply place that she's a restaurateur. They're absolutely worth it.
Avatar
Do they really need convincing? I buy kitchen stuff from them all the time when I need something, no one cares what I'm using it for.
Avatar
A lot of "restaurant supply" stores down here are just junk kitchen shops. The actual places to get restaurant stuff are often membership or industry only.
Avatar
Because I'm a horrible person I follow an auction site that does work with businesses dissolving to find out when someone's going out of business. You can get a lot stuff new or almost directly but some of the supply stores probably source from auctions as well. Restaurants do too.

Apropos your conversation I'm re-reading Economix and landed on Galbraith's bit.
