One of the lesser-noted things Trump did as President that always struck me as strange was, in December 2020, declare Classical Greco-Roman architecture to be the official architectural style of the US government and condemn modernist or brutalist buildings in DC
This was a thing in Nazi architecture. The idea was that the buildings would continue to convey the aesthetic value of Reich for thousands of years. Speer: Hitler liked to say that the purpose of his building was to transmit his time and its spirit to posterity. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruin_va...

Like what the fuck is this? And it was timed right around the "1776 Project" that wanted to install "patriotic" curriculum standards

I've seen how his taste in decor runs. Every other negative characteristic aside, the dude is a walking assault on good taste and aesthetic restraint.

I teach that executive order in art history survey classes alongside neoclassicism.

Holy shit, I forgot about that. And about how my first thought was "Hitler did this, too..."

Although Greco-Roman has a big feel to it, I prefer Moderne - both Art Deco and Streamlined. Brutalist is an assault on the eyes. Like looking at a line drawing done by an emotionless person.

It blows my mind that the WWII memorial in DC looks like something from Berlin or Rome circa 1937. No sense of irony.
