Saddened to hear about the passing of Nicolas Van de Walle. Nic was one of most esteemed and accomplished African politics scholars. His legacy is enormous, and he will be greatly missed.

How I wish that Americans would learn something from the French with regards to how you hold your nose and keep fascism at bay, even if it means that your ideal (imaginary) candidate doesn’t win and you don’t get every progressive item on your agenda. But I guess it can’t happen here.

Pollsters are getting ~1% response rate and then readjusting results based on turnout expectations that might have been right for 2020 but almost certainly wrong for 2024. Biden ain't gonna get 81m, and Trump sure ain't gonna get 74m votes in Nov, but Biden's supporters are more reliable voters.

This is the greatest danger to Netanyahu's ability to maintain his coalition. It's hard to imagine the Knesset passing a law that exempts ultra-orthodox Jews from military service during a war, and it's hard to see the UO parties remain in the gov if it instructs the IDF to recruit Yeshiva boys.

It would have been easy for some of you to say “I support an end to the war in Gaza and a free Palestinian state, but some of the the things people are saying at rallies I attend are hateful bigotry that calls for violence against Jews including my students and neighbors, and I don’t support that.”

My pet peeve: If you conduct a survey experiment in which you provide respondents with information on some gov program, you are NOT assessing the effect of the program, but instead you assess the effect of your messaging about the program, at best.

A general point about Netanyahu’s current political (mis)fortunes: he’s at a point where any decision, no matter how good or bad for others, is costly for him. His entire strategy is predicated on skirting actual decisions so any pressure that forces him to decide hastens his political demise.
