Police officers working at the RNC today (cops who were visiting Milwaukee from Colombus) also shot and killed a homeless Black man.

There have apparently been two incidents involving armed men (including a fatal shooting by police) today, right outside the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

People underestimate the impact of humidity. A NYC account on insta that was posting NYers videos of the heat and commenters were like “it’s only in the 80s” but the humidity was also in the 80s and the entire city felt like a fucking sauna. The impact of the air is not determined by temp alone.

I believe that this is a fitting example of what Ida’s life and work inspire. The children’s people-powered grassroots fundraising effort is one I think Wells would be proud of. Together, we made the monument designed by the late great Richard Hunt a reality.

Greg talked with his students about Ida’s life and work and about the fundraising happening to build a monument. The students wanted to get involved. They began to raise funds. All in all, they donated over $400 to the project.

By the time the goal 4 funding the monument was met in July 2018, 1000s of people across the U.S. & Canada had donated with contributions as little as 75 cents. I want to say a word about the 75 cent donation. It came from a student of Greg Michie, a middle school teacher in a Chicago Public School.

I committed to personally donate $1,000 and asked others to join me in making a contribution. We surpassed my initial goal within the day. So I revised my goal to $20,000 which was met within a few more days. This was at a time when Twitter was still useful for stuff like this.

I learned that a group of volunteers which included some members of Wells-Barnett’s family were trying to raise $200,000 to cover the costs of the monument and that they had been fundraising for over a decade. So I decided to tweet out that I would commit to raising $10,000 in support of project.
