My husband and I have repeatedly, recently, turned to one another and expressed shock at how Newgrounds not only survived the 1.0 web, but 1) Not changed character and 2) Become seriously relevant again.
It's like finding out Elfwood is still around and still expects you to apply to a waitlist.
hell i'm amazed newgrounds survived the death of flash, let alone the entire life and death of web 2.0. that on its own is an insanely impressive achievement
Not just survived the death of flash but they also produced a tool that is massively important for the preservation of flash games and movies just to keep stuff on the site working. It's a good tool too. I got it to run the old CN and Toonami flash games from the early 2000s
@tomfulp.bsky.social and crew (seriously like 5 guys) have been keeping it real for 25 years. The last few years has been a Renaissance but they've always kept things rolling. Its barely hanging on tho. Their Supporter model and what Tom hopes it'll become is inspiring
I actually know artists and animators that recently made profiles there, and occasionally link their newgrounds along with all their other galleries, so it still gots a good flow going on. Very impressive and admirable.
Personally I find SomethingAwful's continued existence to even more shocking. At least Newgrounds has enacted the collective effort to remain relevant. Something Awful's forum exists only due to their collective, obstinate effort of pretending they're still relevant.
