It's been MONTHS since I went to the museum and I'm still thinking about this ancient lil bowl with feet. (Egypt, c.3700-3450 B.C)

My favorite part is how it leans forward a little, sweetly, like "here, have some."

Great minds!
Thinking of her [the bowl with human feet, 3700-3450 BC, Predynastic Period, on display in The Met’s Egyptian wing]

its good to know even 4000 years ago people liked little guys

The coolest thing about the Egyptian footed bowl is that it’s also a three-dimensional hieroglyph: for the verb “to bring” - so it’s an offering bowl bringing itself ❤️

I have a copy of that, it makes me smile every time.

Quentin Tarantino’s now off to make a movie set in Ancient Egypt.

My replica of her is one of my favorite things, right up there with William the blue hippo.

I made a bowl like that in my junior college ceramics class. The instructor didn't want to accept it as a footed vessel. lmao!

🎵And did those feet in ancient times…🎵

Do you know about Medjed? bsky.app/profile/kart...
Enjoyed learning about Medjed, a weird guy who appears as a minor god in certain versions of the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead

Egyptian design, man. So much good stuff.

I love it when artifacts of the past remind me that people have always been funny, always been kind, have always loved making things for their children - ancient toys are my favorite but this footed bowl is definitely on my list!

Now more will be as well ~ TY

28 bucks for a replica in the shop

You could (maybe still can) by a replica of this from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. My mother loved this bowl. I saved and saved and saved as a kid to buy it for her. One of the proudest days as a teenager when I was finally able to give it to her for Christmas. I love this little bowl.

Do you by any chance remember which museum it was?

Perhaps vessels like this were placed above a tomb to present offerings. On the other hand, maybe Dave was messing about at the pottery one day, and made a bowl for snacks.

In the related objects list below the human feet bowl is this one that they’re insisting is a turtle. Okay, sure, if you say so

There's a provenance section at that link. All it says is the name of the person they bought it from at Luxor in 1910, though.

Unfortunately, couldn't find a copy in the shop

I love the detail from here that says the bowl also resembles the glyph for “to bring”, so it’s also a visual pun

I've never been much of a footbowl fan.

It's such a friendly little bowl! I've had a copy from the Met for 20 years or so. I love it very much.
