Taney greased the path to a civil war, but at least the aftermath of the civil war was a country that ended slavery (and finally got people their civil rights a century later).
It's possible Roberts causes a civil war. It's also possible he destroys the country and no civil war bloodily saves it.
I was gonna write that Taney stupidly thought his nonsense would prevent a war and settle the slavery question in favor of slavery, but it's possible that Roberts is stupid enough to think this decision saves the Republic from extremism.
But I think he knows what he's doing and has clinched it.
If Trump wins, I think he might beat Thomas and Alito to declaring retirement. Because he knows what he did, and would like to never be heard from or seen again.
