Left-wing parties banded together in France, even though they disagree over many policies, to push down the fascist right-wingers and keep them from power. It's a template of sorts for what we should do come November.
BREAKING NEWS: Voters turned out in numbers not seen in decades to stop the far-right National Rally from taking power in the French National Assembly. Polls predicted a first-place finish for National Rally, which instead came in third in initial results as polling stations closed.

Got 90 mins into Ron Shelton's DARK BLUE last night (first viewing since '04) and thought I'd found an underrated B movie ripe for reappraisal. Then that badge ceremony happened. Can't remember if that was Ellroy's original ending, but a film that rough deserved a nastier finale. Kurt's great tho.

what are we doing here? he accidentally said million instead of billion and then immediately knew it and corrected himself. he didn’t “flub a line” and then “make an effort to correct himself,” he did the speaking equivalent of a typo that you know you’ve made and instantly correct

If EDDIE MURPHY: DELIRIOUS counts on Cinematrix, VINCE VAUGHN'S WILD WEST COMEDY SHOW: 30 DAYS & 30 NIGHTS - HOLLYWOOD TO THE HEARTLAND should count, too.

Too many people who should know better were sharing that Nuzzi piece yesterday like it was holy writ. She's bad. (If you're new to Nuzzi, read the article shared by Drew in his follow-up skeet.)
I 100% believe that Biden is out of it but I read the Nuzzi thing and it’s awfully breathless for a story that doesn’t have a whole lot of direct quotes in it.

The rarest choice for an Emmerich starts-with-a-vowel movie is hinky. There's another option that just about no one saw (I only remember it because I interviewed the screenwriter). Got Will's rarest '90s movie tho! Vulture Cinematrix No. 100: Jul 4, 2024 I got 9/9 Correct Score: 2658 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩 🟩🟩🟩

I did this a lot. My white whale was Krokus' "Screaming in the Night," a 6-min power ballad w/ no radio edit. 40-sec gutair-and-wind-fx opening kept it out of heavy rotation. Finally caught it on Detroit's WLLZ (98.7). Heard it starting over the outro of "Flight of Icarus" and smashed "record"!
Prior to that it was sitting next to the radio with a tape recorder and pressing “record”’when you heard one you wanted. I can still name some of the songs I got this way circa 1978

I will revisit this weekend, but my current position is that Towne did Fante's ASK THE DUST hot-blooded justice. I think it's the best thing he ever directed, and richly deserving of a critical reappraisal (it got beat up in '06, though I know Rosenbaum was a fan).

Hope Kenny Atkinson's ready to spend his entire introductory press conference discussing what he'll do if/when the as yet unextended Donovan Mitchell leaves. Classic Cavs incompetence to draw this process out and have their new coaching hire address the media on the second day of free agency.

Over the weekend, one of the major party presidential candidates promoted the idea of trying a former congresswoman for treason with televised military tribunals, and I’ll bet you haven’t seen a news article—much less a catastrophizing op-ed—about it.

An infamous campaign trail gaffe that's still repeated as fact in 2024. I didn't know it was BS until I read Ganz's excellent and urgently relevant book (WHEN THE CLOCK BROKE).
The new John Ganz book has a nice retelling of how the Times et al. bludgeoned George H.W. Bush with a fake story about how he didn't know how checkout scanners worked

Seriously. I LOATHE the fact I’m voting for Biden under these circumstances. But I’m a capitol P Pragmatist. As in Charles Pierce. “The thing is what it does.” Pitch me the alternate action that causes less real world harm than a vote for Biden, and I’m in.

Biden is too old. But he has surrounded himself with competent people and has had a conventional first term. Trump is authoritarian but inept. He has surrounded himself with people he hopes will make him more effective at authoritarianism. Neither is ideal. But these are not similar problems.
