Taney greased the path to a civil war, but at least the aftermath of the civil war was a country that ended slavery (and finally got people their civil rights a century later). It's possible Roberts causes a civil war. It's also possible he destroys the country and no civil war bloodily saves it.

I was gonna write that Taney stupidly thought his nonsense would prevent a war and settle the slavery question in favor of slavery, but it's possible that Roberts is stupid enough to think this decision saves the Republic from extremism. But I think he knows what he's doing and has clinched it.

If Trump wins, I think he might beat Thomas and Alito to declaring retirement. Because he knows what he did, and would like to never be heard from or seen again.

I think he just passed Taney, which is not something I thought I'd live to see. At least with Taney you could honestly say that many of the Founders would have agreed with his horseshit. Then again, I never thought anyone would be worse presidents than Buchanan or A. Johnson, but here we are.

I would say worse than Taney, if for no other reason than he had Taney to look to as a cautionary example. It's why I find our current fascists worse than Nazis: we all grew up learning about their example. Everyone knows that path is unadulterated evil.

Becoming the worst sc chief justice in history for the worst president in history is certainly a choice.

Taney was appointed by Jackson who bore a lot of uncanny similarities to Trump, so it fits.

I was reasonably certain he was already there last week and he just took the prize.

No one remembers the average chief justices, and Roberts will never be great, so I think he’s just embracing infamy at this point

As far as the worst justices go, I'd pick either Alito or Thomas, but yeah Roberts is insanely bad as a Justice, and really hurt America in Loper Bright and Trump v United States, which hurts the administrative state and gave presidents basically dictatorial powers.

Roberts won’t rest until he achieves ultimate victory in that race.
