Awkward to have spent almost a decade studying Twitter, writing a book about Twitter, and then becoming outspoken about why I believe it is ethical to abandon ship, to then have other scholars of the same thing over there tweeting away and tagging me in things with the presumption I should engage.

Counterpoint: the arts will continue, because people will always be creative. There will be artists and arts institutions who are visible because they take money from anyone, and artists and institutions who are outsiders for reasons of principle, and life will go on, much as always.
This is from a @financialtimes.com piece on the decision of the Hays book festival to cut ties with their primary sponsor, an asset manager. If this is the purity tests that activists are going to insist on for arts funding, the arts are doomed.

The more general point, popping out of that thread, is that I never cease to be amazed by tenured R1 faculty who seem to think that the best solution to the problems or downsides of their jobs is convert it to some sort of piece-work system where everything would be directly measured & remunerated.

I'm in Haaretz today fleshing out an idea which I've seen bandied about over the past few weeks, namely: we shouldn't be debating "Zionism vs. Anti-Zionism". That's a dead-end; the terms are too vague and fraught, and tie us in unnecessary knots. What we should unite around is being "anti-Kahanist".

Three days after it was revealed that this guy's license was wrongly listed as suspended due to a clerical error, none of the publications listed here (NYT, WP, NYP, USA Today, BBC, CNN, Fox, MSNBC) have issued corrections or updates. reason.com/2024/06/03/t...
The viral story about a defendant driving with a suspended license was fake newsreason.com Corey Harris' case should never have been a national news story to begin with.

Samuel Alito returned home from a grueling day at SCOTUS to find his tenant-in-common and wife, Martha Ann, was flying the ISIS flag. “I entreat you remove that black banner, which is hateful to me,” said Sam. “I shan’t. Betty down the block has refused me a cup of sugar,” she replied feistily.

It sure would be comical if Samuel Alito had recently published an opinion in which he expressed strong feelings about flags and wrote that passersby viewing a flag flying over a building would naturally assume the flag conveys some message on the owner's behalf www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/21p...

Cultural Critique, a journal published by the U. Minn. Press, has rejected a submission by an Israeli author "based on the journal's commitment to BDS guidelines." While BDS guidelines nominally say they target "institutions, not individuals", this has never been true in practice, and so too here.

It’s the second-system effect.
The second has higher stakes in every way -- it's got to be "bigger and better," and you're expected to "do something new" and not just expand your first book. That's daunting, especially if you're like a few* academics who have imposter syndrome, terrified of being a one hit wonder. * most /4

I wonder whether this unnamed dean knows that eagles eat other birds.
When I suggested that this may lead to "non-star" faculty disengaging or leaving, they were nonplussed. One said he'd let them walk if it meant keeping the "stars." He proudly said: "I'm going to feed my eagles." Which I found very weird, but anyway.

It was of course guaranteed that this was going to happen. One option would be to just re-conceive the project as a piece of bad conceptual art titled “Content Moderation is Inevitable.”

Listen, I’m not asking for a Nobel Prize here, but if there’s one thing we can all agree on in this broken world, it’s that a deckbuilding card game with a heavy storytelling element based around the Mountain Goats discography could be really cool
