In The Dawn of Everything the authors talk about how adjacent cultures often aggressively seek to define themselves by what their neighbors are NOT. I suspect this is an in group/out group thing, in part belabored so much in US because it was a "Canadian thing" to start.
Shower thought after yesterday's conversation--I wonder, what is the ethnic and/or class association that makes pineapple on pizza a thing that people lose their minds over? ("It's just Wrong" earns an insta-block did you learn nothing from yesterday)

But if pineapple is a Canadian thing, wouldn't Americans seek to elevate themselves by emulating us? What higher purpose could there be for them than become more like Canadians?

Canadian? We thought it was a Hawaïen thing?

There was this weird online affect around the Mass Effect games where people online “ironically” adopted bigotry against one or other of the alien species. Several places had to ban it because it got so nasty, full of slurs, and inescapably racist that the imaginary part became incidental.

After reading TDOE, and learning about schismogenesis, now I see it almost everywhere.
