the unexpected thing about Talking To Your Representatives is that it can actually work, if enough people are similarly mad about the same thing. you won’t get the elected on the phone. but they will hear about it from their annoyed staff, who might not have time to do anything else

In recent years I've been getting involved in my local politics out here in rural Oregon and I can tell you this: Even large cities are run by amateurs who are making it up as they go along. If you are willing to show up and to learn then you can do a lot towards protecting your communities.

Let me tell you a real boring story! Last year, a queer artist in my community put up a cool Pride installation. Then some bigots used it to hang bigot flags and threatened to sue the city if they took down the bigot signs without also taking down the (admittedly unauthorized) art piece…

The absolutely wild thing is: This goes for ALL social aid. Just *giving people some fucking money,* literally going "OK, how much did you need?", cutting checks, and waving them out the door? COSTS LESS and HAS BETTER OUTCOMES than the current system's bureaucracy and means testing, EVERY TIME.
