twitter users stone age in 2023 hunter-gatherers 🤝 mastodon attempt failed, turned to sky worship for sustenance

Mastodon is pretty great. I get more interaction there than I do here. It also has some awesome features. Like more than 300 character posts, hash tag functionality, the ability edit posts. I heckin' love it. I wish more folks would try it.

If there's anything that Bluesky needs to steal, it's 500 char posts and the edit ability. It's so hard to not have those when posting on this side of the fence.
Avatar
Yeah, I'm on an instance that goes to 1500 and it's lovely. I never run out of space XD
Avatar
1,500 would be way too much for me! I like the whole "microblogging" idea, and 500 character is around where I think you're actually able to fully form an idea without getting into "go back to Tumblr" territory. 300 is always just a tad too short for what I want to say.
Avatar
I don't need more than the 621 that meow.social has. I also have an alt on kitty.social, and that one allows 3000 characters per post!
Avatar
Now I'm really curious how one comes to the decision to make it 621 characters. 🤔 That seems REALLY specific. Maybe there was an initial post the creator wanted to make, and used that as the deciding factor. Like how CDs were 74 minutes to fit Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Avatar
... It's, uh, a joke/reference to a website a lot of furries use. I wouldn't recommend googling it unless you want to open that particular ark of the covenant...
Avatar
621 is a reference to a furry porn website
Avatar
My instance has a 5000 char limit. Also all links on Mastodon are like a set number towards the limit. If it were 623 I'd understand what the limit was referencing. ^_^

I still use Mastodon - it's a different vibe, less politics and less American. Blue sky definitely needs some sort of hash-tag equivalent. It's essential.
Avatar
Yeah @.@ I tried making a feed last night to allow for some specific tag searching. I had to sit with a git-hub document open and learn regex to do it. It's way easier on mastodon, I can just follow hashtags or just click on them.
Avatar
There's some great simplified tools to make feed creation easy! I don't have them in front of me, but I think one is Skyfeed?
Avatar
I think that’s really why a lot of people here don’t like it - it’s not so American-centric.
Avatar
Absolutely - same thing with me. I guess some people have been bitten by joining instances that folded but I’ve been lucky so far (and also donate a few euros per month to the one I use.)
Avatar
In my opinion, combination between this two will be ultimate twitter replacement.
Avatar
And who can forget about Tumblr
Avatar
It was hundreds years ago. Mostly nude content. 🤭

The decision to ban NSFW was devastating to the platform, but there's a sizeable chunk of people using it as a Twitter alternative or even a general SFW platform, especially now wen everyone is scrambling to find alternatives to the birdsite.
Avatar
I'm mostly here because I think this one is going to be the winner of all the alternatives, and mastodon's going to forever be its own thing but never mainstream, which is fine, but mainstream is useful. Can recommend heavily!
Avatar
I think you’re right on this assessment. That’s the feeling I get, too.
Avatar
Oh yeah? Well here is an interaction!

I really did not like the server system nor feel of Masto. It felt way too disconnected and disjointed for someone who wants to just share their art and not think more about it. It was annoying. And I really don't want to start ANOTHER social media account
Avatar
This. In theory, the server idea is nice, but at that point why not just use Discord? Social Media is meant to be generalized. Different instances end up spreading the user base way too thin.

Mastodon crawled so the Sky can run. Everytime I pray the Sky brings fire, maybe ill stop for awhile.

Avatar
I really wanted mastodon to work, but when I couldn't even cut across the silos with hashtags I knew it wasn't going to.
Avatar
This is GENIUS, with admiration, an archaeologist
Avatar
Been on Mastodon nearly 6 years and still prefer it. Bigger character count, following hashtags, CWs, etc. I think a lot of people are put off because federation/picking an instance confuses them somehow. I dunno. Your online experience is largely what you make of it.
Avatar
it's because picking an instance matters way more than it should. pick the wrong one and you will simply not have a functional feed bc half the replies to any semi-large post are hidden from you
Avatar
Seems i found the right instance for me, in that case XD
Avatar
Will be curious to see how things go once federation kicks in here, or if/when they decide this place needs to be profitable. This feels overall “twitter like” but that also means they have different intentions and I’m sure a lot is subject to change so 🤷‍♂️
Avatar
Saw a spout and tried going after it, but it turned out to be a horrible monster
Avatar
Slow your roll there, Ishmael.
Avatar
who? who did that? I don't think anyone did that
Avatar
my main twitter account got banned and making a new account is so far still more engaging than bsky until they open it fully bc I'm only seeing like 2 people post on here
Avatar
You are following 15 people.
Avatar
Ray’s right. A bit like Mastodon, you need to follow if you want to see activity, unless you’re already famous in your own right.
Avatar
Yup, 2 rules for joining new social networks Follow anyone who posts anything you like Follow people who like/reply to your toots

Idk, the Discover tab here is better

have you adjusted your home feed preferences yet?
Avatar
Check to feed of your some interests in the specialised feeds
Avatar
Mastodon was too complicated to figure out
Avatar
It's really not THAT complicated once you get past the "wait, what does it mean I have to pick a server" part (which is where I got stuck originally). There's a few functions of the service that are a little obtuse, but they're mostly overshadowed by all of the Mastodon's strengths.
