I think deconstructing all these different levels of culture is really great, but it also makes you way less fun at certain types of parties.

I am really going to be working on getting more writing time in my life this coming week. Wish me luck. It’s something that I really do need to have in my life, and I’ve neglected making the time for it of late.

Might be another situation where I have to go offline for a day or two, sometimes these stories just have little details in them that trigger me in some kind of way, and this one is just a lot.

Happy Disability Pride Month! According to the CDC, up to 1 in 4 people in the US have some kind of disability. We honor disability justice champions who won significant progress over many decades, as we continue the fight for better policies to create a more livable, accessible future for all.

I think if there’s one thing that I am most likely to start ranting about when dude-bros want to tell me anything about Star Wars, it’s Marcia Lucas’s role in the original films, and how she’s been wiped from film history since she and George divorced.
Marcia Lucas in fact won an Oscar for her film editing of Star Wars. George Lucas was up for two that year and won neither (he was beaten out by Woody Allen for both of them). He has still not won a competitive Oscar.

When I was a counselor at a summer camp, I was the only one who adored the middle school kids. And now that one of my own kids is hitting that age, I am reminded why. They are just so intensely everything. Sometimes they’re still little kids. Sometimes they’re little adults. And when they’re in

As I dropped the kids off at the ex’s this morning, and saw how splendid and huge all the apples on my apple tree are getting, I muttered, β€œHow about them apples?” And I’ve been laughing ever since, because I’m easily amused.

Okay, one person in She-rah is straight, and by person I mean a talking horse.

Piggies for your otherwise heinous timeline.

Also: pigeons are not bad at making nests, we’ve just changed the habitat they have to live in, and their little scattered stick-nests that work just fine on a rocky ledge look very silly on a windowsill. #justiceforpigeons

Anyway: thank you to the over 300 people following me for days like today when I get off on a tangent about something the virtual zeitgeist has made very important to me. This absolutely will continue to happen.

See: the way the word β€œcraft” gets framed as β€œfrivolous activities that will maybe serve as home decor” rather than β€œskill-set built over years of practice that result in beautiful and useful items.”
Our culture has done a really great job of convincing a lot of us that some of our most valuable skills are useless and frivolous. My band teacher in high school used to carry on about basket-weaving classes at college as if they were the biggest waste of time. So many people were cruel when I

*AHEM*
Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that so many of the hobbies society looks down on are often a.) ones that give you a teensy sliver of independence from society and b.) the ones society relegated to the realm of women once upon a time.

My summer parenting tip: if you have a kid with the math-inclined ADHD, kid-friendly versions of D&D are out there, and kids can spend a couple of hours setting up a campaign that will take 20 minutes to play through after dinner.

You're entitled to your despair. But understand that when you catastrophize on social media, you risk spreading learned helplessness. Which is exactly what fascists want, for people to lie down and cry.

Instead of panicking or yet another postmortem (forgive me I've been Black this whole time so not much of this is breaking for me), link up with like minded folk for practical solidarity. Shield those more vulnerable than you and figure out how you can soften structural abandonment.

A little bit of prettiness in these times. Aldi had bunches of roses for $5 this week, and I bought three of them, because life is short and sometimes you buy yourself flowers.

For the entirety of this century, Democrats have been naive institutionalists while Republicans have been destructionists. Institutions cannot save you if they do not exist. Conservatives are trying to kill us while liberals are still bitching about following the norms.

Just another day of increasing anxiety as more Supreme Court decisions come through. I didn’t need to learn how absurd it would feel to live under the rule of a government skipping merrily into fascism, but here we are.

As I contemplate gender things, I really wonder if neurospicy people are more likely to be LGBTQIA+, or if we’re just more likely to consider alternatives to what society hands us as options.

Hey! It's the last day of Pride Month! And what a Pride Month it has been! *Pause for disassociation* Anyway, before the calendar flips, pick up some books by trans authors!

I don’t come in a starter pack. I’m only found when you’re flipping over rocks looking for newts.
I don't come in a starter pack. I was only distributed at conventions in 2005 and immediately banned from tournament play.

Here’s a pro tip that most folks following me probably already understand, but if there’s a femme-presenting person helping load furniture into a U-Haul, it’s possible to speak to that person without mentioning how shocked you are that β€œa woman lifts heavy things.” Especially when the femme person

I know smut may seem like a frivolous thing to be upset about, but crushing it is part of fascism. Controlling all forms of sexual expression is fascism. Only allowing certain kinds is fascism. Smut peddlers are always canaries in the coal mines.

The problem I have with "we are going to get through this" messages is that people tend to get real quiet when you ask who the "we" in that sentence refers to. And even quieter when you ask how many of "we" we can lose along the way and still be thought of as "getting through."
