To piggyback: I truly think a few too many of you are far too passive in your participation in media consumption. If you are sick of having crap firehosed onto your dash/feed/scroll, CHANGE WHAT MAKES IT TO YOUR DASH/FEED/SCROLL. Block, adblock, mute, actively seek out instead of waiting for recs.
reminder that this website does not have an algorithm so if everything on your homepage sucks or you think this website is “dead” it is quite literally a skill issue. follow more & better people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"I hate my feed, it's infuriating, it's depressing." OK, so. Fix it? "I can't!" Well, probably closer to you don't know how, but OK again. Delete the app. "I won't!" OK, yet again. Then figure out how to use it so it doesn't make you sad. BlueSky makes this way easier than most apps.

Most of you don't use Feeds, I bet. Figure them out. sSubscribe to Feeds you vibe with. I follow Horror Artists, Horror Podcasts, Blacksky, Japanese Cluster, GameDev, and various shitposter feeds. I enjoy being here as a result.

we must all be on edge, the overall tone of the site has changed the past couple of weeks. understandable, given *waves arms at everything* not saying there is a fix, not saying anyone in particular has to fix it. just… maybe be aware, its a little different and difficult at the moment.

Let’s also not forget how the iconic “Akira Slide” has influenced genres the whole world ‘round…
Released in Japanese movie theaters on this day…do we need to mention the title? One of the biggest influences to global cinematography and pop culture, Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA debuted in theaters on July 16, 1988.

HE LITERALLY OWNS AND LIVES AT A COUNTRY CLUB
The claim that Trump “ushered in economic populism” & “downgraded the importance of country-club Republicans while prioritizing blue collar workers,” not only reads like an RNC press release, but is belied by Trump’s record (tax cuts for the rich, an anti-labor NLRB, support for wage theft, etc.)/3

Why Vance rather than Rubio? Because of crazy: "Mr. Carlson told Mr. Trump in that June phone call that he believed that if he chose a “neocon” as his V.P. ... then the U.S. intelligence agencies would have every incentive to assassinate Mr. Trump in order to get their preferred president."
How J.D. Vance Won Over Donald Trumpwww.nytimes.com It started with a meeting at Mar-a-Lago more than three years ago. Later, Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk and other key allies made direct appeals on his behalf.

i can also vouch for this. a high school friend hadn't heard of Project 2025 until i told him and was not amused by it, to say the least. admittedly, he's not a Trump guy, but he wasn't gonna vote for Biden until he learned about it.
if you’re trying to engage with politically disconnected people about project 2025, identify a specific part that you think will resonate with them. i just told my friend who’s a public school teacher about the plan to abolish the department of education and that got her hooked.

9781568360225 Hopkirk, "The Great Game: The Struggle for Empire in Central Asia" 9780679720195 Kennedy, "The Rise and Fall of the Great Powers" came first to mind but is def. focused on Europe (and money), the colonies aren't directly covered but my memory of the exact contents are VERY fuzzy

a google also pulled up 9781107640177 and 9780199547371 but I couldn't get either to come up (checking gapines.org interlibrary loan) so those might depend on if you have privileges at your local university library.

IDK who the first person to express this sentiment was, but: "When people talk about traveling to the past, they worry about radically changing the present by doing something small, but barely anyone in the present really thinks that they can radically change the future by doing something small."
What are people doing w/neighbors & friends to create & nurture networks of collective care & mutual aid? What small but significant (or super size me and spectacular, and everything in between) actions & practices are people talking about, preparing for, or taking?

It's as disheartening as it is fascinating that we're just a few years shy of a century since the richest people in the world lined up against the poorest in almost exactly the same kind of political confrontation we're facing today.

Remember how the rich fucked everything up so badly the only way to keep America from a Communist revolt was the New Deal? Don't think that's gonna work twice ...
