It’s a very obscure question but I did some research and it turns out that the president who led us out of the Depression and kicked Hitler’s ass was actually in a wheelchair? Who knew?
Kevin, I am not a historian, so IDK, but has there ever been a President in American History who used a mobility aid? And, if so, would you say this president who was so weak as to need, say, braces or a wheelchair, is considered to be one of the top President’s ever?

Lmao they just changed the title of the piece from “Why I don’t vote” to “Why I won’t vote” rather than tell readers that the guy actually does vote

CNN fact checked whether I in fact caught walleye while wearing a specific hat more thoroughly than the NYT checked whether the “I dont vote” guy actually voted.

To reiterate a point I just made in a response: There is a lot of evidence suggesting Trump is incapable of being president--regardless of what you think of his politics. We know from last term he doesn't read, doesn't process information well, and has an incredibly short daily work window...1/

just watched 74 people speaking at least a dozen different languages become american citizens in a ceremony at monticello, where the speakers were themselves children of immigrants. inspiring stuff and a vivid illustration of what reactionaries want to snuff out

This. Key passage: "As someone who would like to keep the American Republic, I would suggest that for the good of the country, all citizens should recognize that Trump’s campaign platform is not merely stupid and illiberal. It is downright un-American."

Just ... the idea that Biden stepping down and Kamala rolling out her campaign—platform, veep, strategy, interviews, debates—that that would be BORING? Forget everything else that's wrong with that passage, you're looking at the most West-Wing-ass shit to happen this century and yawning?

I am an upper-middle class white guy but it consistently blows my mind that the Trump plan to put a permanent ICE contingent every Latino neighborhood (because that's what it would take to deport every illegal immigrant) has garnered almost no coverage. They're aren't kidding, they're gonna try.
The basic problem here is the voters think that the Trump presidency was great actually. I am convinced this is some kind of trauma response to 2020 where people think bad things can never happen. If the race keeps going this way I guess we'll find out.

It’s undeniable that the Biden campaign is in crisis and worthy of intensive coverage and headlines of this sort. But there is another crisis that threatens to upend and weaken, if not destroy, our democracy. The contrast in how the Times is covering these related crises is striking.

seems newsworthy, can’t wait to hear about it showing up in paragraph 47 of another piece about how biden is old

Durbin pulling his punches so as not to “ruffle the feathers” of Republicans is yet another example of preemptively attempting to prevent an expected backlash. Trying to placate the right in this way has failed over and over again, and it is important to note that the GOP rarely if ever does this.
this is even more ludicrous! durbin could unilaterally prevent republicans from blocking nominations if he simply stopped the blue slip nonsense—something republicans themselves won't honor once in power. this democracy is cooked

This a really important point. Since the New Deal at least conservatism has been premised on the idea that they are losing that it is “five minutes to midnight,” that civilization hangs in the balance, and that emergency politics is justified. I track this history in my book, FREE ENTERPRISE.
Yes. They believe that the United States is on the verge of destruction by the left and Trump is their man on horseback come to restore the nation to its rightful owners. They are giving him the tools he needs to do this job.

very much reflective of the lack of any real survival instinct among journalists that they think the big story today is whether biden will step down
“What makes you so confident you should be president?” is an actual question a reporter shouted at the incumbent who just warned about a reckless court decision that imperils democracy

Easy to lose sight of the significance here, but the sitting president just gave a speech condemning the Supreme Court for a ruling that expands presidential power. It’s also a president who stands to benefit from this ruling, given that his opponent is vowing to imprison him and his family.

Biden’s statement was really good, IMO. And very effectively delivered.

Gotta say, even my largely politics-is-not-for-me relatives on Facebook are having a fucking conniption over the SCOTUS ruling. My uncle posted "We left England because we don't want a King. Charles is an inbred." I'm not sure what one has to do with the other, but he's right.
