Juneteenth does not celebrate "When news of the end of slavery finally reached Texas." Juneteenth celebrates when the racist people in Texas that tried to hold on to slavery for as long as they could even after it was abolished, finally couldn't keep up the lie anymore.

Remember Kid and Play? Texas should look like Kid's hair. But it looks like Play's hair. Because Texas wanted to hold onto that racism just a little bit longer. Texas has been pulling these types of stunts throughout its history. 🤷🏿‍♂️

The Kid 'n Play hair analogy is *chef's kiss.*

If I recall Texas preferred to give up some of its land to Oklahoma rather than abolish slavery.

Thanks for the article. I really don’t get the state of mind you need to have to think « yeah it’s better to leave some land than to let some humans have rights ».

(I checked the size, sorry for the metric system, Texas gave away around 14’000 square km, which is 140% of the size of Lebanon)

I'm no doubt missing a point, but that bottom border is a river and is jaggedy due to geology, not politics. Oh, wait, are you referring to the panhandle maybe? I wanted to read further, but the image wasn't a link, so I'm responding w/the question. Thanks!

Ah, never mind. It is clickable (guess I mis-clicked earlier) so I can read the post.

To be clear, though, slaves in Texas were de facto freed 6+ months before slaves in the Union states of New Jersey and Kentucky, who would have to wait for the ratification of the 13th Amendment. Meaning there were still people in legal bondage under the US flag on the Day of Jubilee in Texas.

Juneteenth celebrates when the United States army arrived in Texas & spanked them for trying to keep their slaves after the rest of the Confederacy surrendered. Because Texas sucks. A bunch of Texans (and others) then moved to Brazil so they could still have slaves. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confede...

Ugh, there's so many ill-informed people in that post the most infuriating being, I always knew it as being invaded by the evil Mexicans!🤦🏻‍♀️ Nevermind that they were inside Mexico! Then there's the one always showing up w/ what now seems copypasta about Santa Anna to shut down the Americans are evil.🙄

I periodically remind people that Texas is, indeed, a unique state: the only one to fight wars of secession with their parent country in order to enslave black people *twice*.

The TX history museum in Austin was surprisingly educational on this when I went to visit a few years ago.

After 2 1/2 years they finally had to own up to it.

the fact that they just kept ignoring the Emancipation Proclamation for 2.5 YEARS always enrages me.

Some of them kept ignoring it past Juneteenth. A WaPo article said a man walked into a (sheriff's?) office in 1903 asking if slavery was over. No internet, no tv, you can't read, and all the local white people like you enslaved? Much easier to do that.

Im gonna post that second bit on my san antonio Facebook group lol

Yeah I just found out yesterday that's what my daughter was told at school.

I gotta admit I get a little chuckle over the Maga people who are mad about getting a day off work. HRDYNTB?

Wait, slavery is over? Shouldn't someone tell the white people?
