I've heard some ridiculous sports stats before, but this one might take the cake:
There are 273 players in the Baseball Hall of Fame and 182 of them have played at Rickwood Field in Birmingham. 67%. Unreal.
Sometimes I realize that most of my friends don’t despise their job with every fiber of their being and I wonder what that feels like. I think I last enjoyed a day at work during the Bush II administration.
The quality of store bought chicken breasts seem to just get worse and worse. Lots of clots, weird textures at times. I’m chalking it up to some sort of anti avian flu concoction that they probably pump into these birds.
Spending my Friday afternoon only listening to “popular” metal records I’ve never heard. First off System of a Down “Toxicity”. Clearly a step above the mainstream metal bands of the turn of the century. Pretty intelligent lyrics, some folk flourishes. Will re-visit.
When you’ve gone from “young upstarts” to “older couple with older kids” on the block resident hierarchy list whenever a new resident moves in, you kind of feel like you did ok.
Was planning on celebrating the 4th by blasting 60s and 70s examples of America’s greatest export, rock and roll. Then immediately listened to a record by an English band followed by a Dutch band 🤷
my uncle spent summers working on MV in the 70s and recalls overhearing an exasperated guy in a bar complaining about how "the cameras keep falling in the water" & “that goddamn shark" wasn’t working. then jaws came out and he realized what he'd overheard.
For anyone on that cusp of break up depression today. Still my favorite song by them. I’m not being a smartass when I say that Darius Rucker would turn this into a hit. It fits his voice so well.
Zach Bryan has John Moreland and The Boss on two tracks on his new record, so that’s at least two songs on this album I won’t hate after my kids and wife play it non stop for the next three months.
I watched “Frances Ha” last night. At first I thought it was really sad that the lesbians couldn’t find a way to love each other at the end, but the more I thought about it, they weren’t really lesbians but more like childhood best friends at age 14. Frances is just in arrested development.
Many years ago I was approached about DJing events or at bars/shows and my lovely wife said it was a bad idea with the unchecked alcoholism and all. I brought it up again recently and now it’s a bad idea due to all the gear and record buying that would ensue. She’s not wrong.
Hey, anyone have any recs for new Jamaican bands doing the late 60s/early 70s ska/rocksteady/reggae style? No dub/dancehall, nothing too psychedelic, just dance music and vibes?
Realized after 15 years that “American Analog Set” and “All American Rejects” are two separate bands and not the same band. Which now makes sense as to why I always think those two bands sound differently every time I hear them. I’m firmly team “American Analog Set” now that I know the difference
I am entirely over losing power every two weeks. I’m starting to lose the ability to razz Texas when apparently WE Energies in Wisconsin can’t figure it out either
I love Springsteen, truly, but when he talks about a catfish at the end of his line in “The Rising” I’m not convinced he’s ever held a fishing pole in his hand.
My Summerfest 2024 is over. Shovels & Rope, Tyler Childers, Adeem The Artist, S.G. Goodman, The Hold Steady and The Afghan Whigs were all very good to great. The Dandy Warhols aren’t for me. That’s your Milwaukee music report for the last week. Join me next Friday for The Waco Brothers.
@jpgorman.bsky.social thanks for talking me into that Childers show last night. It’s real interesting watching them toe that line between crowd pleasing ballads and stretching out and having some fun. He’s got a real good grasp of all the segments of his audience I think.
