there are no mappable lessons from the french election to the u.s. because the left does not have comparable institutional political power/representation in government. our abysmal party selection and the way campaign finance works are as ever part of the problem
Also the structure of the US electoral system itself precludes things like coalition government. It’s really impressive in a dire, very bleak way, how the underlying systems of government and power in the US specifically work as a counterweight against progressive governance.
Sorry. Should have used my words. The French left succeeded because candidates with no chance of defeating the right dropped out to consolidate the vote. That’s the only applicable lesson here.
Still, left and centrist candidates for locally based elections dropping out is not the same thing as a presidential candidate dropping out. One takes massive organization and collaboration, one is an individual decision.
sorry i had an adhd moment and forgot to respond until now. also have a coalition government, we do not, they also don’t have the stupid electoral college - it’s meaningful there in ways it is not here. pm is agreed upon in ways president is not. plus again rfk is a non-issue
