So, as civil rights acts were put into law, and people saw the protests were working, even more people became convinced they didn’t work? 😲

I think it comes from a similar place as when yet another study on how UBI or similar shows economic benefits. It doesn't matter if it works. It's not supposed to work, and the outcome is not what they want, so they yell louder that it doesn't work as if to try and force reality to conform.

Think about the BLM protests of the past 10ish years. All that shit looked like it wasn't working and just pissed everyone off, now half of us hate the police & want reform, something considered impossible that might happen now. We living through it working again despite it all.

I agree, but there is an important distinction between “awareness raising” and material outcomes. They are often not correlated. Federal funding for police departments went up after the 2020 protests. Likewise Biden has just re-affrimed his commitment to Israel even the face of widespread protest.

we are living through the backlash to the civil rights movement still. this has a long time yet to work its way through.
Avatar
Well yeah that too, shit comes in waves, and pendulums swing

This is a problem with polls. You may think most people are answering the question asked. But those most vehemently opposed to black people gaining rights are actually answering the question "do you like what these people are doing"

Just gonna drop this here…

same as it ever was

There certainly was violence, but not by the protesters. Sounds familiar

Just had my mom [ who was alive then and is left of shitlib ] tell me that sit ins were legal because of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 ignoring that that was 1961 and Greensboro was 1960
Avatar
Lol they were so legal that for some strange reason the cops were beating the shit out of the black people sitting down 🤔
Avatar
Indeed I think in her mind the cops were breaking the law or something but it’s so frustrating that she has the chronology is backwards and / meanwhile she basically accused me of just listening to hearsay and supposition rather than evidence
Avatar
It’s so weird people contest this because there are literal timelines and pictures in history books lol
Avatar
far too often deeply imprinted narratives overrule any presentation of facts & chronology

Very well said. This is way more articulate than my analysis which is just “what a bunch of dumbfucks”

now that AI generated books and stuff are out there, i am reeeeeally scared about the future and how we will learn from the past.

Just sent that to my mom/thanks I assume she just have read it before but maybe somehow didn’t ever consider why he was in jail / etc
Avatar
He must have just been dropping by the jail.
Avatar
yeah there was just a conveniently located mailbox in the jail
Avatar
To be fair cops beat the shit out of black people doing nothing illegal anyways.

Hearing some lady on the view saying how MLK only wanted non-violent protest makes me wanna troll so bad. “Yes, he often said that he appreciated the white moderate over the black radical because they understood the message, but were only willing to act if things were done properly.”

Remember that if justice could be achieved by politely asking those with power, we would already have it.

I think of this whenever I remember the Roe protests outside of the homes of the Supreme Court (I should have saved Brooklyn Dad's post about how they should be civil) ny1.com/nyc/all-boro...
Dems warn against violence as protesters gather at justices' homesny1.com People protested at Kavanaugh's and Roberts' homes

They usually ask Cons & Repugnants as they are the most likely to respond and make a whole bunch of noise on issues. They then use that response like a tool to move policy into the conservative camp. This is not on the surface but a feature of the system. The journalist doesn't realize its happening

If you are opposed to extending human rights to a group of people, think about who benefits from their oppression. If you don't benefit, you may want to rethink your position. If you do benefit, you must rethink your position.

That 57% continues to try hard to get their way

it's wild how many of those who said the sit ins hurt, these days say the progress happened in spite of the sit ins. they don't see the whole picture and it's infuriating. they think nothing is connected and that things "just happen".
Avatar
Avatar
Action is the only thing that drives change. No doubt the sit-ins were effective in helping bring about change.
Avatar
would love to see a parallel poll made today and see what the difference is
Avatar
They say it hurts because they're racists and don't like that it's working and want hem to stop. Several universities have already divested because of the protests

"Dissent must not lead to disorder" amiright?

It's a small thing: "the Negro's chances" but referring to an entire race as one being should be a very very big thing.

Wow, that's actually real - and so utterly perfect for so many applications today. Thanks for sharing!
