The University of Minnesota has paused the hiring of Israeli scholar Raz Segal to head the institution’s Holocaust and Genocide school over his principled position that Israel is perpetrating a genocide. Truly reprehensible. jewishinsider.com/2024/06/univ...

This is just incredibly stupid. The man's a walking encyclopedia. He's the best of the best.

Two heads ? We're sentient Karl puppets ye' of little faith

This implies that the University of Minnesota supports the genocide of the Palestinian people. Do I have that right?
Avatar
I wouldn’t say “implies” so much as, they just do
Avatar
Clearly the error was hiring a Holocaust scholar who would try to apply historical studies to current events. Maybe there’s some other variety.

The ‘other variety’ resigned from the board.

the previous director resigned from the board and claimed Segal justified Hamas atrocities. this was in reference to this article, in which Segal said Hamas's mass murder "rightly provoked horror and shock in Israel and around the world" jewishcurrents.org/a-textbook-c...
A Textbook Case of Genocidejewishcurrents.org Israel has been explicit about what it’s carrying out in Gaza. Why isn’t the world listening?

But there is nothing in that article, that anyone can dispute; one only needs to search UN archives going back to its inception, & you can find evidence of everything he mentions.
Avatar
So what who are they trying to kid? If all that’s required is to follow what the governing board tells you… then you don’t need an expert on the subject. If you need an expert but you don’t like his/hers findings then you’re a genocide denier
Avatar
They resigned from the board huh, seems like a win for everyone

At a time when the fuckedest up of all Israelis dominate the news, salute to a real one. Also, I love that police crackdowns on pro-ceasefire demonstrations are “anti-Israel encampments” that “turned violent.” [note: I don’t actually love that]
Avatar
They were peaceful, until provocateurs mixed in with them, & started stirring up trouble. The administration needed a ‘cause’ to take actions against the demonstrators.
Avatar
Provocateurs and cops. Have yet to hear about the police breaking up a pro-Israel demonstration, that side must be exceptionally well behaved

Very lopsided justice. Money talks!
Avatar
Money isn’t all of it. Like, nobody is bribing Biden to unconditionally support Israel. He’s a true believer
Avatar
That’s not what I meant. Donors with big money are pressuring institutions to silence protests.
Avatar
Is there any way to put counter-pressure here?

If you’re a genocide studies scholar and you’d like to sign onto an open letter to President Ettinger demanding Dr. Segal’s appointment be honored, please get in touch with me! University of Minnesota faculty are appalled and are mobilizing
Avatar
Please write to the President and Provost expressing your outrage! Emails are Pres Jeff Ettinger [email protected] and Provost Rachel Croson [email protected].

Oops sorry, we were looking for the kind of genocide expert who only recognises them after they've already finished!

It's all about the money and political pressure that money brings

Perhaps the university decided that someone who represents Israel’s stated intentions of rescuing the remaining hostages and dismantling the terrorist organisation responsible as "genocide" isn't well suited to teaching students about genocide aftar all.
Avatar
Interesting how you're skipping over the bits where Israeli officials also said their actual destructive aims out loud to pretend they ONLY stated the intention of rescuing hostages.

Who said what, and when? Please upload a link. I'd like to see what comments you're talking about?

1. 7 Oct was a dark day indeed! In the wake of that attack, the barbarity of which shocked the world, it doesn't take a huge leap of faith to assume he's talking in riddles.

2. Given the 1000's of people cheering in the streets as the terrorists returned with hostages - some even beating and kicking the victims, it's hard to argue that the civilians were unaware. What's the problem with what he's said?
