If you care about the USA, the single best thing you can do today is to contribute to a downticket race thats close. The second best thing you can do is cancel your NYT subscription and use that money for the purpose.

What about Septle? They include the NYT word in their three puzzles (mostly; now and then it's inexplicably different) but I don't think they are a property of NYT.
Timed is if you're interested in competing (weekly), but you can completely ignore that part of it if it doesn't interest you. It only minorly influences the score afaict.

Tbh the timed aspect is not the most important factor in determining the score, so don’t let that intimidate you. Plus, like NoHomers said, you don’t have to turn scores in or compete with anyone if you don’t want — ignore the timer and have fun
