"What the report finds is that Biden held on to 94% of the people who said they would support him before the debate. For Trump, 86% of people who said they would support him before the debate said they would do so after the debate." news.northeastern.edu/2024/07/09/b...
Biden's poor debate performance had almost no impact on voter preference, new report saysnews.northeastern.edu A new report shows that despite Biden’s debate performance – poor as it may have been – voter preferences haven't been impacted.

"the shift in support was actually more in Biden’s favor, although Lazer notes it’s not statistically significant and well within the margin of error...1% of people who said they would vote for Biden before the debate, switched to preferring Trump, while 3% switched from Trump to Biden."
Avatar
"Seeing the dominant narrative coming out of the debate, Lazer and the team at CHIP50 decided to test the hypothesis that Biden had lost ground in public opinion after the debate."
Avatar
"Notably, Lazer says, they didn’t survey two different cross-sectional groups of people before and after the debate like most polls. Instead, the team was able to survey the same group of respondents from a survey conducted before the debate."

“Trump was convicted of a set of felonies,” Lazer says. “The impact it had on surveys was zero. Biden had a debate where most people said it proved he was too old. Survey respondents said, ‘Yeah, I saw that. He’s too old. I’m still voting for him.’ The numbers just aren’t moving.”

Unbelievable the whole discourse has got this far without Gen X insisting Reagan was senile whilst still in the Cold War.

This is demographic erasure, denying the lived experiences of old bores in Fugazi t-shirts.

I did have someone say that to me a few days ago. *checks it off the bingo card*

people already basically know who the two candidates are

The poll sounds like good news until you remember that this means things have stayed the same: Trump is still set to win. www.270towin.com

yeah, it's very hard to capture the "why does the dem party only allow nonagenarians anywhere near power? it sucks but there isn't an alternative so it is what it is" vote
Avatar
If Biden were in a better position going into the debate he’d have a decent case for staying in the race by pointing to this.

his decent case is winning

The last 2 weeks easily did more damage than the debate did

Don't think for one minute that the NYT and other media don't know that. I am NOT a believer in conspiracy theories but folks we are being led off a cliff on purpose.

The real reason for NYT's hate for Biden is that A.G. Sulzberger, the heir to, and chairman of NYT is their first leader who was not able to land an interview with the sitting president since FDR. He appears to have taken this very personally.
How The New York Times Became the White House’s Least Favorite Paperwww.politico.com Biden’s people think they’re “entitled." The Times says “they’re not being realistic.”
Avatar
well - i do want the president to be accessible to the press. and Biden's health may be a reason he has not been. This is a consequence that happened. I don't like the attacks, but it is a logical consequence. access is really important.
Avatar
There was no logic involved in this public meltdown
Avatar
In retrospect, the tail usually wags the dog. Maybe Biden and his people should have known this and just given the damn interview to satisfy the very privileged pricks at NYT.
Avatar
Honestly I don’t care for either and am coming down on Biden’s side in this one. The stupid crap the @nytimes.com has focused on during his presidency has drastically lowered them in my esteem.

“Easily more damage” seems to be a guess (is there another poll?). But even if true, any loss of support isn't necessary due to legitimate consternation or vigorous debate, but rather the unforced error of debating a bloviating liar in the first place.
Avatar
The headline is making me crazy. It shows that people thought Trump’s debate was worse.
Avatar
People hate Trump. Seeing and hearing him reminds them of this.
Avatar
YES! This is a key component to the election that people are overlooking.
Avatar
OK but this just says most people who said they'd vote for Biden before the debate will still vote for him after. It doesn't say how many people (like me!) will still vote for him if he's the candidate, but think he should drop out and would prefer if there was a different candidate.
Avatar
Because, that distinction doesn’t matter. Lots of people every election wish there were a different candidate.
Avatar
It does matter to try to forecast those who weren’t sure about Biden before the debate. Those are the people that could convert to blue if a new candidate emerged given that nearly all Biden voters will vote for the new candidate as well.
Avatar
Get absolutely real. If you think a new candidate is what will persuade someone to VOTE AGAINST A FACIST RAPIST WHO IS THE SAME AGE . . . you are kidding yourself (I’m being generous)
Avatar
*getting kicked repeatedly in the balls by a candidate* Other candidate: *is old* Me: it's so hard to decide
Avatar
Avatar
There are no undecided voters. Anybody who tells you they can't decide between the fascist or the old guy is lying to you. There are suppressed voters, disenfranchised voters, voters who need transportation or time off work to get to the polls. That's who we should focus on.
Avatar
Exactly. If you’re worried (and, everyone should worried about fascism) do any and all that you can: register, organize, donate vote.
Avatar
Truth, there is no such thing as undecided, even independent voters. One way vote, vote, vote How we roll.
Avatar
unfortunately, there are. i know a young person here in Tucson who i respect their work in the community, who served in the military and was disgusted by it, who is generally thoughtful - but who is thinking of not voting. They do exist. I think he'd vote for Kamala tho i didn't ask.
Avatar
If your point is “nobody should vote for Trump,” I agree with that, but if it’s “nobody will vote for Trump,” I am sorry to tell you that is not correct
Avatar
Where on earth did I even IMPLY that nobody will vote for Trump?

And... if we don't get the short-term solution, is there any possibility of ever working on the long-term one?
Avatar
We educate them about Project 2025 instead of wish casting a scenario in which a perfect new candidate materializes who can take Biden's place without alienating his supporters.
Avatar
Alienating supporters? The supporters I know are supporting to stop Trump in his tracks. That holds regardless of the candidate (which need not be perfect - just able to speak clearly and call out Trump on his lies in real time).
Avatar
Yes. Alienating supporters. It's a hell of an assumption that there's 0 consequence to the DNC telling their own voters that their primary vote didn't matter and it's being thrown out. All while saying it's to save democracy.
