There absolutely is this pervasive global idea that Air Conditioning Is The Sworn Enemy of Being Green (in a way that we don’t tend to think about heating), and this is dangerous and bad.
Providing cooling that uses less energy is great, but forcing people to go without entirely? Not so much.
The world has been very damaged by generations who confused the noble and good sentiment of "try and channel grief and pain into something good" into thinking the grief and pain were themselves good, to be actively sought, or a prerequisite to doing good
Perhaps Hairshirts and a Personal Scourger will become all the rage again.I prefer to think that one might find more energy to be compassionate to others when one is not distracted by emotional vomitus &mopping up one’s bleeding. Maybe it’s just me though. I am firmly opposed to unnecessary pain.
i once read an essay that argued that modern, godless people are constantly trying to reinvent the classical ideal of Virtue and yup that’s it right there
It frustrates me because I, the hardier spouse, _would_ use less air conditioning by myself, but I'm not going to apply "turn off air conditioning" to the spouse with multiple preexisting conditions who might not survive it so well.
Environmental activism has had many causes across the years and goes back /far/. Before CFCs/ozone in the ~90s, there was activism focused on acid rain, then anti-nuclear protests, then endangered species. Much earlier you have the movement for national parks. 1918 was Save the Redwoods League, etc
Nobody, and I mean really very few people, appreciates how good of a science communicator Rachel Carson was. John Muir had a lot going for him but protecting Yosemite kind of sells itself. She had a steep hill to climb and she changed the damn world. Respect.
