Prison censorship of books is well-documented, but they also (unsurprisingly) censor the news—especially news about race and the criminal justice system. I took a look at how that's playing out for incarcerated New Yorkers for @nysfocus.bsky.social nysfocus.com/2024/05/20/n...
Censoring the News in New York Prisonsnysfocus.com The prison agency has blocked articles on racial bias within its own system, arguing it could "incite disobedience."

Did you know? The DA of Uvalde, in Texas, is running for reelection entirely unopposed this year, despite complaints she helped shield cops from consequences for their failures during the mass shooting in 2022.

This reminds me of my “favorite” example of how openly counterproductive our prison system can be. The single largest job training program in NYS prisons is barber school. And until ~2008, anyone with a felony record was categorically banned from getting a barber’s license.
The head of the NY prison system says Corcraft, which pays incarcerated people pennies an hour, is an essential job training program. People who've worked these jobs say it's a coercive system requiring hours of their labor just to afford basic toiletries: hellgatenyc.com/corcraft-pri...

Bluestockings Cooperative is an indispensible feminist bookstore in NYC. It's been a fantastic community space for as long as I can remember. Now it's facing eviction because the store is providing Narcan — and they've actually saved lives!. Please do what you can to help. Details below...
In all honesty we did not think this story would have such reach! Some ways to support 1️⃣ donate to the shelves (bluestockings.com/free-store or www.paypal.com/US/fundraise...) 2️⃣ check out our members program (withfriends.co/bluestockings) 3️⃣ just spread the word we exist 🩵🩵

Today the NY Court of Appeals goes farther than the U.S. Supreme Court has (though not farther than common sense would take you) and unanimously holds that when police use a drug-sniffing dog to search your person, that's a search under the Fourth Amendment and it requires some justification.
