So... before I even get into all the horribly offensive shit he's done, lets all recognize he is unoriginal. He self-admits he worked in a video store watching obscure movies all day that inspired him. All of his movies steal scenes from obscure movies, and he self admits these are "homages"...
A VAST majority of these films are kung fu, blaxploitation, or otherwise diverse/unknown filmmakers he knows he can steal from and nobody will notice or care. If you're a film buff, I *know* you have noticed scenes in his films he has stolen.
His first *good movie* true romance was written like shit, the director reordered the scenes so it would be coherent. His career launches over a director fixing his script.
then he makes reservoir dogs, oh cool movie! totally original and nothing like any other heist movie ever it was just cut out of order like that first director wouldn't let him do! then pulp fiction, self-cast n-bomb dude, no more comments
then jackie brown: complete ripoff of blaxploitation films
kill bill 1 & 2: complete ripoff of kung fu films
inglorious basterds: reappropriation of *actual jewish nazi hunters* story and scenes *directly stolen* from a Mel Brooks movie
i dont think what tarantino is doing is "ripoff" - its a pastiche with the assembled elements being used in a surprising and different context to produce a different effect on the audience than the original material.
Yeah I don’t find Tarantino especially interesting because I find his pastiche more masturbatory than elevating BUT calling it outright plagiarism means that by the same logic we would have to cancel a lot of other art I find incredibly meaningful.
I am calling it plagiarism because it has been a very consistent piece of his work that he relies on and never gives credit to the inspiration. I think a lot of artists are "inspired" and either talk about it or it is just a presence in their work, not the backbone.
He cast Pam Grier in Jackie Brown. I don't know how much more referential you can be to the Blaxploitation genre than having her play the lead in that movie.
Ray Nicolette. When Dennis Farina casually calls him a scumbag in out of sight it’s one of my favorite scenes. “Kinda like a husband who cheats on his wife saying what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her”. Incredible. I miss Dennis. Hate how he was a cop. Sorry I just worked out and my ADD is firing
i always wonder if people who think citing prior works in your art is plagiarism really realize that they are essentially cancelling the entire renaissance as well as most art in general.
Yeah. The n-bombs, the feet stuff, and being abusive to cast and crew is more than enough.
Keeping the art snd artist together does not mean the artist had no skill. It means we have higher ethical standards.
