In 2022, I left Google in search of a sustainable approach to open source maintenance. A year later, I was a full-time independent maintainer. Today I’m announcing the natural progression of that experiment: Geomys, a small firm of professional maintainers with a portfolio of critical Go projects.

Straight off the iPhone 15 Pro, in plain Photo mode, this is what the top left quadrant looked like. It's easy to forget that there is less "camera" and more "processing" in these insanely capable, but flawed, devices.

Newspapers will run obituaries of the lead singer of a band that had one hit decades ago. Scientists not so much. When Shannon died, @nytimes.com ran one but almost no one else. And now Ed Stone has died and there is no obituary that I can find. Scientists get no respect.

Had the rare privilege of hand-feeding an echidna. This is Tamagotchi, she's blind and therefore can't be released, but she is well taken care of at the amazing Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. www.bonorong.com.au The tongue is 20cm long and very warm and probing. youtube.com/shorts/WqB9D...

I understand how LEDs work, but sometimes it’s worth just looking at them, remembering the history of lighting technology, and kind of sitting back and marveling at how far we’ve come. Lesson: Invest in science.

Black skimmer 🪶 📷 Hayward Regional My fav pic of the year so far. Skimmers have a big underbite, and drag the lower mandible through the water as they fly. If it hits something, the beak snaps shut. Amazing birds, and I was ecstatic when this one skimmed straight at us. This photo is uncropped.

Hoo boy. Just seen the discussion about the latest Adobe Photoshop T&Cs, and they give Adobe the right to look at EVERYTHING you make with their software. For AI training and policing. No opt out. (HT Sam Santala at the other place)

Have you noticed that English people (not all English speakers, just English people) pronounce "sixth" as "sikth", turning the x into a k, and often making the "th" at the end almost inaudible? I thought it was just one announcer but now I hear it everywhere. I dunno if this is new or old behavior.

If someone likes a piece of art that I do not, I will not try to convince them they are wrong. I used to, but no more. Why would I want to reduce the amount of joy in the world? There isn't enough as it is.
You know, when someone says ‘I enjoyed a thing’ you are actually permitted not to reply with a small essay explaining why you did not.

Excellence... that emergent property from proper curation of the people in an organization is soooo fragile. If it's working, there is a special kind of arrogance in thinking that you can make excellence work better without understanding what it is you seek to improve upon.
