No fr. That was extremely harmful. It's already challenging to be a victim without the added fear of retribution. I hope this didn’t discourage anyone from coming forward in the future
I honestly fear that lack of holding whoever did that accountable by hiding the individual responsible to preserve their reputation might have added discouragement. The person who did this might have faced punishment by being removed from Aegis, but the act of protecting their reputation is bad.
My opinion on community moderation was “well this can work if the mods are fair minded and even tempered, and people feel like they can generally trust them to be those things” and then like two weeks into the experiment one of the mods went rogue so so much for that second part
One thing that's been repeatedly apparent from the start is that bluesky and a lot of the creators adjacent to bluesky chose abuser friends over victims.
I heard murmurs that something happened but don’t know details. Is there a thread or something I can reference?
Normally I’d try to avoid digging, but as a labeler creator I feel I should probably be up to date on these things 🫠
I know basically nothing of what happened recently, but I will say that I definitely saw some red flags about that labeler. The biggest one was when they tried to push that "verified" label, that felt very much like they were overstepping.
I made the mistake of questioning the verified label (I hadn’t been aware of the incident that preceded it) and got thoroughly reamed by some of the verifieds for “supporting abuse and impersonation.” Blocked ‘em all.
Yikes, that is pretty ridiculous. My opinion on it overall is that there are certain things that labelers should avoid doing, because there's not even remotely comparable oversight when compared to companies with very strict regulations. At absolute best it's a giant struggle to keep people honest
I must admit... I am also curious.
I know that Aegis reshuffled its staff as a response to that happening, so whoever did that was likely removed from the team for it, but the lack of knowing who it is worries me, since it is likely a big account with huge influence.
I’m unsure whether to unsubscribe as so many racists and trolls were caught initially and I’m concerned that turning it off will be like the ghost buster containment system turning off, but I also don’t trust recent labeling
